In the frame of the technical trip, members of the SU IEEE club have been able to obtain detailed knowledge on both industrial and academic world of Germany. At the first day of the trip, world-renowned BMW World, located near the Munich Olympic Park, was visited. BMW World consists of BMW plant and BMW museum. SU IEEE members realized a guided tour of the plant, in which more than 900 cars and up to 1,400 engines are built per day. In this plant visit, students gained an an exciting insight into all areas of automobile production. They observed and received information about almost all stages of the production including the Press Shop, Body Shop, Paint Shop, Engine Shop, the Production of Interior Equipment and Seats, as well as Assembly of the automobiles. Moreover, they had a unique experience in BMW museum, being able to delve into the history of the company and observing automobiles built at various stages of its history.

In the following days, SU IEEE members came together with the IEEE members of Technical University of Munich. Both groups, consisting mainly of electronics and mechatronics engineering students, exchanged information about their respective education systems, investigated the differences and similarities between engineering approaches of two systems. TU Munich students showed SU IEEE members their university, concentrating specifically on engineering departments. Students were able to observe the research environment in TU Munich by visiting the digital image/video analysis and power electronics laboratories at the university. They acquired important information about an international research facility and the German education system.

Lastly, SU IEEE members also visited the world’s largest museum of technology and science, the “Deutsches Museum”. With approximately 1.5 million visitors per year and about 28,000 exhibited objects from 50 fields of science and technology, Deutsches Museum have been a unique experience for SU students. They were able to get information about many scientific breakthroughs from past to present and took a glimpse to the future of science and engineering. SU IEEE members focused especially on nanotechnology, microelectronics, optics and electrical machines sections of the museum and got involved to museum’s interactive experiments.

Overall, the technical trip has become both a great learning experience and enjoyable tour of German industry and academia, motivating SU IEEE members to further organize and attend to such trips.

MIT Professors at Sabancı University

Professors from MIT are visiting Sabancı University this week.  Distinguished scholars from MIT gave lectures as part of their visit.

Professor Stuart Madnick, Baron of Langley, from the MIT Sloan School of Management and MIT Dean for Undergraduate Education  Professor Daniel Hastings gave lectures in the evening of Thursday, March 29th.

Professor Stuart Madnick of the MIT Sloan School of Management gave a speech titled "Web 3.0 is coming, will you be ready?” at the MBA ve EMBA alumni meeting held in the Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum – the Seed.

Stuart Madnick discussed the long-term objectives and useful tools and technologies associated with web 3.0.  Madnick reflected on the transition from web 1.0 to web 2.0 and what these two versions of the web brought, and said that web 3.0 would not only support new applications, but create applications in its own right.  Also discussing past difficulties with computers, Madnick argued that the situation would change rapidly with the transition to “semantic web.”  Saying that the semantic web is a progression of the current system, Stuart Madnick added that the system would enable users and computers to work in better harmony.  Madnick said that the semantic web would make it easier for computers to process and comprehend data, giving them strong reasoning skills.

Prof. Stuart Madnick

Professor Daniel Hastings gave a lecture titled “MIT and Education” in the seminar held at the Minerva Palas in Karaköy.  Hastings explained the education system at MIT, and mentioned international cooperation initiatives of the university.  Hastings said, “MIT is a national US university with an international vision.”  Hastings discussed the values of MIT and said that reputation was of utmost importance, and that reputation was a prime concern in the international initiatives that they undertook.

The pioneer of digital arts at Kasa Galeri

“Charles Csuri: Sketchbooks of Time”

Sabancı University Kasa Galeri hosts an exhibition by Charles Csuri, the pioneer of computer graphics, computer animation and digital fine arts.  The “Charles Csuri: Sketchbooks of Time” will be available for visiting between March 20 and May 10, 2012.

The “Charles Csuri: Sketchbooks of Time” exhibition held in association with Leonardo Electronic Almanac, The Ohio State University and Goldsmiths College will be available for visiting at the Sabancı University Kasa Galeri between March 20 and May 10, 2012.

The new exhibition in Kasa Galeri includes the most recent designs, animations and drawings by Charles Csuri in addition to a selection of classics in computer arts.  Works are framed within the visual definition of time based on the curatorial analysis of the relation between the artist and his medium (computer and software).

Csuri contributed to countless international exhibitions throughout his life and was awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Lifelong Achievement in Digital Arts Award in 2011.  The prolific pioneer of computer arts created his first work of digital computer art in 1963.  Today, Csuri’s works are included in the special collections of the leading institutions of the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The exhibition is the collaborative work of Head Curators Lanfranco Aceti (Director of Kasa Galeri Direktörü / Member of Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) and Christiane Paul (The New School / Whitney Museum of American Art) and Curators Janice Glowski (Wittenberg University) and Özden Şahin (Kasa Galeri).

Kasa Galeri Director Lanfranco Aceti said, “We are happy to have this exhibition in Istanbul where we can display the works of a visionary who created computer art and pioneered digital arts, paving the way for the current new media and digital arts.  It is an honor for Kasa Galeri to be collaborating with the other institutions involved in this exhibition.”

Charles Csuri
Charles Csuri is best known for pioneering the field of computer graphics, computer animation and digital fine art, creating the first computer art in 1964.  Csuri has been recognized as the father of digital art and computer animation by Smithsonian, and as a leading pioneer of computer animation by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and The Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group Graphics (ACM SIGGRAPH).  Between 1971 and 1987, while a senior professor at the Ohio State University, Charles Csuri founded the Computer Graphics Research Group, the Ohio Super Computer Graphics Project, and the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design, dedicated to the development of digital art and computer animation. Csuri was co-founder of Cranston/Csuri Productions (CCP), one of the world's first computer animation production companies.  In 2000 Charles Csuri received both the 2000 Governor's Award for the Arts for the best individual artist, and The Ohio State University Sullivant Award, that institution's highest honor, in acknowledgment of his lifetime achievements in the fields of digital art and computer animation.
