The first Summer School of inGenious will be hosted by Sabancı University in Istanbul

The first Summer School of inGenious - the European Coordinating Body in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Education will be hosted by Sabancı University in Istanbul

The first summer school of ingenious will take place in Istanbul in partnership with Sabancı University and the participation of hundreds of teachers from all over Europe.  The event will be held at the Larespark Hotel between 24 and 26 August 2012 with new and improved teaching strategies on science education and career development for the youth.

Dr. Sondan Durukanoglu Feyiz, Vice President of Sabanci University, and Prof. Derek Bell will welcome hundreds of teachers arriving in Istanbul from all over Europe for the first Summer School for inGenious - the European Coordinating Body in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Education pilot schools: a 3-day event to exchange and advance in partnerships new teaching strategies to engage young people in science education and careers.  STEM’s efforts are led by European Schoolnet, a network of the ministries of education in Europe and in other countries in the region.

The Summer school to be held in Turkey this year will bring teachers from pilot schools in Europe together to exchange results with their colleagues, present their views and have their say to industry and education stakeholders. The event will provide a unique opportunity not only for training and sharing best practice, but also strengthening relationships between educators and industry professionals.

A roundtable with representatives from Ministries of Education (Turkey, Portugal, Slovakia) and Industry leaders (Intel, Shell, and Smart Technologies, among the others) will conclude the event on Sunday 26 August.

inGenious has three main activities: research, testing and web.  The research branch includes analysis of gaps, obstacles and main benefits from the collaboration between schools and industry, and the identification of best partnerships between school and business worlds across Europe, to be promoted and scaled up at EU level.  The testing branch includes the coordination of pilot schools across 19 countries to test and enhance activities, materials and approaches to STEM education, while the web branch involves online portal and community of teachers with resources available to all interested schools and companies.

Number of schools from Turkey increases
Pilot schools from 19 countries, including four schools from Turkey (Enka Technical High School, Kocaeli; Enka Schools, Istanbul; SEV Elementary School, Izmir; and Sanko School in Gaziantep), have been identified to participate in the first year (2011/2012) of experimentation under the inGenious project.  During the last academic year, “pilot teachers” met online and tested new forms of collaboration with industry in their class - hands-on lessons and experiments in class, meetings with experts and  introduction of information communication technologies - bringing companies closer to school and helping pupils think beyond their classroom and about future careers.  Turkish schools participation in the project is getting stronger: seven schools from Turkey will join the second round of pilot schools starting in September 2012 for the new school year.
