The most entrepreneurial and innovative university

Sabancı University named the most entrepreneurial and innovative university in Turkey

Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Nihat Ergün: “Sabancı University ranks first on the University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index.”

For the first time in Turkey, a “University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index” has been compiled and announced at a press conference by Nihat Ergün, the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology.  Sabancı University ranks first among the most entrepreneurial and innovative universities in Turkey.

The top 5 of the index are, according to rank, Sabancı University, Middle East Technical University, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, Özyeğin University, and Istanbul Technical University.

Nihat Ergün noted that universities with a faculty of fewer than 50 members were not included in the ranking.  Therefore, the ranking includes only 126 of the 168 universities in Turkey.

The “University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index” includes 5 aspects, namely scientific and technological research competence, intellectual property pool, cooperation and interaction, culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, and economic contribution and commercialization.

"Self" an exhibition by Sevim Sancaktar

Sevim Sancaktar
" Self "
27 Eylül - 3 Kasım 2012
Açılış / Opening: 6.30pm

C.A.M Gallery hosts "Self", an exhibition by Sevim Sancaktar, from Sept 27th through Nov 3rd, 2012 .

Sancaktar brings together issues of identity, boundary, and "non-place" within the framework of belonging, and considers the fragile circle around these ebbs and tides. There is an implication in the work that humankind cannot truly "understand" but simply struggle with feelings and questions of identity and existence.

The artist examines her own family’s emigration from the Balkans while highlighting her studies on the problems of other Soviet citizens who immigrated to Latvia during the "Soviet Period". Observations composed during her residency as a visiting artist in Riga are integral to these works. Sancaktar questions the transitions in identities and lives in terms of decisions about "leaving or staying" in the country by presenting two different storie; she emphasizes the different stories based on immigrations and moving within the current, changing regime. Problems of symbolism (when) based on photographs and documents generated in the past are also examined in the works.

In short, the exhibition examines a sense of "self" which has been changed/transformed over the course of time and the terms of invisibility which contribute to thinking about identity and misidentification.

IES Abroad to Open Study Abroad Program in Istanbul, Turkey, Fall 2013
U.S. college students will study contemporary Turkey at Istanbul’s Sabanci University, one of the country’s leading research schools, as part of the new Study Turkey Program

IES Abroad is pleased to partner with Sabanci University, one of Turkey’s leading higher education institutions, for our new Study Turkey Program in Istanbul.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 03, 2012
IES Abroad, a consortium of 200 major U.S. colleges and universities, will open a new study abroad program in central Istanbul, Turkey, beginning Fall 2013.
An ideal place to study in vibrant Turkey, Istanbul is the country’s most populous city and its cultural and financial center. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmora Sea, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. With a population estimated between 12 and 19 million people, the city is one of the largest in Europe and the world.

Istanbul is an excellent location to study the recent rise of contemporary Turkey as a regional economic and political power, along with the economic, cultural, religious and historical influence Turkey has had on central Asia, the Middle East, the Balkans, the Black Sea region and North Africa.

The new Study Turkey Program offers direct enrollment options at Sabanci University one of Turkey’s leading research universities. Sabanci University is a small, elite, private liberal arts university that is highly competitive in admission. All instruction at Sabanci is in English. Additional partner university options will be also be available as part of the IES Abroad program.

Sabanci has three faculties: Engineering and Natural Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, and the School of Management. The School of Management is one of three management schools in Turkey accredited by AACSB, and the only one of the three in Istanbul that offers all instruction in English. The engineering school is a candidate for ABET accreditation. Ninety percent of the faculty members at Sabanci University have Ph.D.s from the U.S. and most others have Ph.D.s from Western European countries. The University also has an active internship for credit program. Visit http://sabanciuniv.edu/en for more information.

While in Istanbul, students will have the opportunity to live in a student residence hall or in a homestay. Field trips to locations such as the ancient Roman city of Ephesus, Cappadocia, Troy and Ankara round out this exciting new program from IES Abroad.

“We are pleased to partner with Sabanci University, one of Turkey’s leading higher education institutions, for our new Study Turkey Program in Istanbul,” said Dr. Michael Steinberg, Executive Vice President of Academic Programs at IES Abroad. “The university’s goal to develop students who are competent and confident individuals who possess the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career anywhere in the world complements our approach to international education.”

Sabancı University International Board of Overseers Discussed University – Industry Cooperation

The Sabancı University International Board of Overseers, composed of 12 global business and academic leaders, held its annual meeting in Istanbul.

As part of the Sabancı University International Board of Overseers meeting, a conference titled “Two Perspectives on Research in the Context of the Rise of Asia” was held on Wednesday, October 3rd at the Seed hosted by the Sabancı University Alumni Association – SUMED.

The conference featured keynotes by Professor Timothy Tong, President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Dr. Xiang Wang, partner of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.  Professor Tong’s speech title was “University-Industry Cooperation” while Dr. Wang spoke on “Commercializing and Discussing Intellectual Property” .

Prof. Timoty Tong, bilgi transferinde üniversitelere düşen görevi anlattı
Professor Timothy Tong, President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said that their university had been in close contact with the industry throughout its 70-year history.  Professor Tong commented that fields of cooperation ranged from health to construction, and that electric vehicles began as a student project and was developed into a business by the industry.  Professor Timothy Tong further added that they believed in the importance of knowledge transfer as many products used in the private sector today were the result of knowledge transfer.

1.2 million dollar micro-funding for students
Discussing the new vision and targets of Hong Kong Polytechnical University, Professor Tong said, “We are raising the bar and seeking perfection.  We want to do things that have practical value and be a leader in this area.”  Professor Tong, said that as a university they signed 60 licensing agreements and acquired 52 patents in the previous year.  Professor Tong also explained the micro-funding scheme for students initiated last year.  Tong said that successful students were entitled to the second phase, while the unsuccessful ones were not required to repay the funding, having gained important experience in the process.  Tong said that last year’s micro-funding of 1.2 million dollars returned as 1.9 million dollars of revenue, and that this year’s funding amount was 1.7 million dollars.

Intellectual property lawsuits in China have impact on companies across the globe
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP partner Dr. Xiang Wang said that China went through a great transformation in the last 30 years.  Dr. Wang explained that while the manufacture of replicas was viewed as sharing information in China, intellectual property was undergoing change in the country as well.  Dr. Wang noted that 1.3 million patent applications were made in China last year, explaining that there were intellectual property courts in all provinces and that the United States had went through the most intellectual property and industrial espionage conflicts with China.  Reminding that many companies relocated their production to China, Dr. Wang argued that intellectual property lawsuits in China had impact on all companies across the globe.  Dr. Wang concluded by saying that China needed to start exporting intellectual property.

Also attending the conference were Sabancı University Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı, President Professor Nihat Berker, and the newest member of the International Board of Overseers, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Faculty Member and Nobel Prize Laureate Professor Peter A. Diamond.

Sabancı University Kasa Gallery begun to support young artists

SUBJECT: Homework: Make My Day by Batu Bozoğlu

Sabancı University Kasa Gallery, in collaboration with FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), the Leonardo Electronic Almanac, Goldsmiths, University of London, University of Westminster, and the MA in Media Studies at The New School has initiated an annual residency program for young artists from Turkey.

Launched in 2012, the residency program will continue to support one artist each year by offering the opportunity to use the gallery space as well as by providing mentoring, exhibition material and hosting a final solo show by the artist at the end of the residency period.

Kasa Gallery has received many applications from Turkish artits for its residency program for the summer 2012. After a careful review, Batu Bozoglu with his project Homework: “Make My Day” was selected as the winner.

Homework: “Make My Day” is a new Kasa Gallery commissioned art project aiming to create collaborative artworks with public participation. It is an interdisciplinary piece where the communication and sharing occurs online through its website. For Homework: Make My Day, the artist has gathered “homework” in the form of letters sent to him describing what the artist should do for the duration of a day.

The artist from his engagement with the audience has created a body of artworks using a variety of media ranging from painting to photography, video to installations.

The exhibition Homework: Make My Day by Batu Bozoğlu will be at Kasa Gallery between November 9 – December 14, 2012. The opening cocktail will be at Sabancı Üniversitesi Minerva Han hall on November 9, 2012 at 19:00.

Artist’s Biography

Born in 1983, Batu Bozoğlu graduated from the Painting Department in Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts. During his university studies, he has produced several acrylic paintings around the themes relating to the contradictions between concepts such as religion and technology, organic and mechanic.

Upon his graduation, he started a collaborative project titled “Bobin Yayın Radio Project,” which was an online interactive radio program focusing on the issues of art production. Bobin Yayın was broadcast for eight months and met its audience in the exhibition Pist/Rezerve. The illustrated diary and notes which the artist kept during his military has become another ongoing project titled “Chronicles of an Insignificant Man.”

Bozoğlu, based on his MA thesis “Life as a Practice of Art” in Sabancı University Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design program, started to transform everyday life into an art work. His project “Make My Day” gives the public the opportunity to send “homework” assignments to the artist through its website. These assignments are done by the artist, recorded on video, and then used as inspiration for paintings, creating a joint set of art works.
