The child will be only as self-confident as the mother is strong
The event began with the welcoming speech of School of Management faculty member Burcu Taşoluk.  Following a film screening, KAGİDER Vice President Selma Akdoğan made the opening speech, discussing the importance of developing women’s entrepreneurship and reinforcing the social and economic position of women.  Akdoğan explained the Young KAGİDER Days Project, saying that the initiative would ultimately expand to 10 universities with professional leaders, entrepreneurs, sociologists and psychologists as keynote speakers, and would serve to inform young individuals about a variety of jobs.  Concluding her speech, Selma Akdoğan said, “The child will be only as self-confident as the mother is strong.  If you have economic power, you will be shown more respect as a productive individual, and will respect yourself more.”

Marriage and motherhood is not a career
Professor Bengi Semerci, a psychiatrist specializing on adolescents, took the floor after Selma Akdoğan and gave a speech titled “The Effects of Women’s Involvement in Economic Life on the Society.”  Professor Semerci underlined the importance for women to be involved in work, saying “Young girls are taught that their most important duties are to get married and have children”.  Semerci said that marriage and motherhood could not be considered a career, explaining how working women were regarded “without choice.”  Debunking the myth that working life is a man’s world, Professor Semerci said, “Being human, working, and succeeding is enough for achievement in one’s job.”

AvivaSA CEO Meral Eredenk, Professor Bengi Semerci, national basketball team player Yasemin Horasan and Serhat Görgün of Galata Business Angels spoke in a panel discussion moderated by Selma Akdoğan.  Meral Eredenk said that it would be wrong to view life as entirely made of work, marriage or fun, and that striking a balance between all three was important.  Eredenk discussed the importance of educated women taking part in professional life, saying, “You are the most valuable asset in this country.  Do not let this go to waste.”

Serhat Görgün spoke on the importance of entrepreneurship for the development of Turkey, and explained the role of woman entrepreneurs.  Görgün said, “If Turkey wants to advance, technology should be prioritized and woman entrepreneurs supported.”

Yasemin Horasan said that as a basketball player, she ran her own business.  Horasan said that as a woman who worked non-stop to maintain her performance, she was in a way a company that provided employment opportunities to many.  Explaining how basketball taught her to take responsibility, manage risks and remain resilient when faced with crises, Horasan said she believed that her learnings would continue to benefit her in the future.

Pınar Kapralı Görsev made a presentation titled “My First Idea, My First Enterprise” after the panel discussion, explaining the various aspects of entrepreneurship.  She was joined by her business partner Piraye Antika for the question and answer session.  Some of the topics discussed by Pınar Kapralı Görsev were the five requirements of entrepreneurship, the key to successful enterprises, how to start and enterprise, idea and team, business model and implementation, and the creation of a business plan.

First exhibition of the year at Sabancı University Kasa Galeri: E-Scapes

The first exhibition of the year opened at Sabancı University Kasa Galeri.  The “E-Scapes” exhibition portrays the work of an American and a British artist.  The fusion of art, science and technology by Jane Prophet and Paul Catanese will be on exhibition until the 1st of March.  The curators of the exhibition are Lanfranco Aceti and Özden Şahin from Sabancı University and Vince Dziekan from Monash University, Melbourne.

Jane Prophet’s work in the E-Scapes exhibition at Kasa Galeri is entitled “Explorations of Structure,” and involves the examination and rediscovery of existing works of art.  Prophet brings together traditional esthetics and innovative media to discuss the scientific methods and technologies in performing art.  In doing so, she chooses a variety of themes from fractal mathematics to the politics of landscape.  The innovative esthetics in the myriad forms of Prophet’s work provides elements of surprise in their rediscovery.

Jane Prophet is a professor of art and interdisciplinary computer sciences at University of London’s Goldsmiths College.  Her research fields include art, computer science, digital humanities and technology.  Among her new work are The Withdrawing Room (2009), laser-cut dictionaries for Samuel Johnson’s House; (Trans)Plant (2008), a kinetic aluminum sculpture inspired by the structure of a plant; a lighting installation made for Australia in 2007, and the Souvenir of England, an apple tree draped in black velvet and displayed ina  giant snow globe.  Prophet divides her time between London and the US East Coast, where she has a studio.

The second artist of E-Scapes, Paul Catanese, has an exhibition titled “Visible from Space.”  Research and implementation for this exhibition was supported by the Goldwell Open Air Museum bordering the Death Valley, where the artist worked for a month in June 2010.

Paul Catanese is a hybrid media artist, Associate Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts at Columbia College Chicago and the President of the New Media Caucus, a College Art Association Affiliate Society. His artwork has been exhibited widely including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, SFMOMA Artist's Gallery, La Villette-Numerique and Stuttgarter Filmwinter among others. Paul is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including commissions for the creation of new artwork from Turbulence.org as well as Rhizome.org.  For more information, please visit http://www.paulcatanese.com/

The exhibition is designed by chief curators Lanfranco Aceti and Christiane Paul and curator Vince Dziekan, and is published on digital platformas as part of the Leonardo Electronic Almanac (ISAST/Leonardo) Digital Media Exhibition Platform.

An interdisciplinary first by Sabancı University alumni

“Tiyatro POT”, an interdisciplinary drama ensemble of Sabancı University alumni, will stage ‘4.48 Psychosis’ as its first drama project with interactive stage design at the Taksim Maya Sahnesi on Wednesday, February 8 and Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 8.30 pm.

Founded in 2011 by VACD 2010 graduate Gizem Darendelioğlu, Tiyatro POT focuses on thinking about innovative performance ideas and creating projects that bring together performing arts with new media technologies.  The ensemble consists of artists from various disciplines such as drama, visual communication design, film and television, social studies and mechatronics.
“4.48 Psychosis” is the first interactive stage project of the ensemble.  The cast includes Sabancı University Mechatronic Engineering graduate Burcu Karadeniz as assistant director; Electronic Engineering (undergraduate) / Mechatronic Engineering (master’s) graduate Osman Koç in sound and interaction design, and Social and Political Science graduate Sadun Özdinç in lighting design.

“4.48 Psychosis” is Tiyatro POT’s first project, and emerged as 2010 VACD graduate Gizem Darendelioğlu’s graduation project on interactive art.  Consulting her friends at the Sabancı University Chamber Drama Club, Darendelioğlu helped the idea to evolve from a project to a production, and the ultimate creation of Tiyatro POT.  The professional performance of the play began in late 2011, and the play received wide critical acclaim after only five performances.  The first performance of 2012 took place at the Maya Stage in Taksim on January 29th, and further performances will follow at the Maya Stage.

“4.48 Psychosis” is the last play and epilogue on life by Sarah Kane, the shrew of the British drama scene and one of the leading representatives of the “in-yer-face” movement that emerged in the late 90s.  The play is a monolog by a sufferer of psychosis.  The patient and her language is a metaphor for the depression of humanity, trapped in the concept of “normalization” imposed by modernity.  Tiyatro POT brought a fresh new approach to the script and designed the stage as a series of images revolving in the mind of the character.  These images include prerecorded videos as well as videos streamed and directed in real time, which is a novel use of technology.  Cameras trace the actress onstage, locate her position and add visual depth to the stage with videos, stills or graphics.  This is an innovative approach to depicting split personality, fragmentation and multiple personalities embedded in the text.  In addition to blending technology with art, the play supports the text with strong acting and visually rich narrative.

If the objective of art is to tell the story of the human with respect to the realities of the times, an artistic movement of the 20th century may achieve the right form if it utilizes technology to serve the content – this is the motto of Tiyatro POT, whose projects involve interactive artistic production, digital stage design, and video performance.

In addition to the use of pioneering interactive technology in 4.48 Psychosis, Tiyatro POT will continue with new projects and performances in international festivals.

The Carbon Disclosure Project won the Zayed Future Energy Prize in the NGO & SME category

In recognition of its work to catalyze the transition to a profitable low carbon economy, drive greenhouse gas emissions reduction and sustainable water use by business and cities, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), whose Turkey chapter is being managed by the Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum, has been awarded the top accolade in the SME & NGO category of the Zayed Future Energy Prize.

Now in its fourth year, the Zayed Future Energy Prize has swiftly established itself as one of the most prestigious awards for modern solutions that will meet the challenges of climate change and forms one of the main features of the World Future Energy Summit, held in Abu Dhabi.  Designed to celebrate and encourage leadership and innovation in sustainable development and to establish more effective long-term approaches to energy consumption, the Awards attracted 1,103 nominations and 425 submissions from participants in 71 countries.

“We are delighted to be honored with a Zayed Future Energy Prize,” said Paul Dickinson, CDP’s executive chairman, “We have been working hard for over a decade to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the globe by using the power of information.  We believe we are catalyzing real change across the global business system through measurement, reporting, transparency and analysis, creating the win-win scenario of profitable, low carbon growth.  This award is testament to the role that a green economy can play in facilitating sustainable economic prosperity and CDP’s role in driving that.”

Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum Director and CDP Turkey Director Melsa Ararat said, “This award will reinforce the role the CDP plays against climate change in Turkey and across the world.”

Carbon Disclosure Project
CDP is a global independent not-for-profit organization that works to prevent dangerous climate change and protect natural resources such as water through the efficient allocation of capital in order to create long-term prosperity.  Working closely with investors, business, cities and governments, CDP provides a transformative global system for thousands of organizations around the world to measure, disclose, manage and share environmental information and reduce their energy consumption, carbon emissions and water use.

Over 3,700 companies and cities across the world’s largest economies have been influenced by CDP to measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, climate change risks and water strategies.  The largest collection of self-reported climate change data in the world is held by CDP.  By putting this insight at the heart of business, investment and policy decision making, CDP is enabling corporations and governments to mitigate risk and capitalize on opportunities stemming from climate change.  This information also allows the investor community and the public to understand which companies and cities are acting most responsibly in relation to climate change and water use and to make decisions that drive action towards a more sustainable world.

Sabancı University students go to Dubai for “Tea Conversations with CEOs”

Sabancı University Economics and Management Club members met with CEOs in Dubai for the first time between January 22 and 27 with the support and sponsorship of the Al Habtoor Group. This was the seventh overseas event of the club members, who had the chance to meet the leading figures of the Dubai business, politics and media circles.  The group will meet Gerald Lawless, Group Executive Chairman of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Istanbul on February 7 and 8 as part of the Dubai meetings.

Members of the Sabancı University Economics and Management Club traveled to Dubai to meet the executives of leading companies such as the Al Habtoor Group as part of the “Tea Conversations with CEOs” series of events.  This was the first event that enabled students to gain a better understanding of the Arab business world.

Going for a different culture and setting this time, the group held meetings in Dubai between January 22 and 27, 2012.  Among the executives the 16 members of the club met were Anil Wats, Executive Vice President & Chief Operation Officer of DP World; Mr. McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free; Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor Chairman of Al Habtoor Group; Michael Tomalin, CEO of National Bank of Abu Dhabi; Ahmad Alshaikh, Managing Director of Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI); Tariq Ahmed Nizami, founder of CEO Club of UAE, and the CEO of Dubai Media.

In addition to these meetings, the group will meet Gerald Lawless, Group Executive Chairman of the Jumeirah Group, the proprietor of Dubai’s seven-star Burj al Arab Hotel, in Istanbul on February 7 and 8.

The students have met close to 150 CEOs so far, and say that taking information and recommendations from CEOs with proven track records, as well as the ability to ask a variety of questions thanks to the candid nature of the meetings have great impact on their personal development and future plans.

Comments from Tea Conversations with CEOs team members
After visiting the leaders of the global business world in Istanbul, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria and Singapore, the group’s Dubai impressions are as follows: “As an organization, we aim to listen to the success stories of distinguished business leaders from around the world, and understand different business cultures.  In this respect, Dubai is a key piece in the global puzzle that we seek to understand.  We also spoke with Trade Attaché Serdar Kumbaracı, who said that Arabs had a fondness of Turks, saw them as one of their own, and regarded Turkey a developing market, which fueled their enthusiasm for investing in Turkey.”
