ELAE – 7th January 2020

Students who can take the ELAE  on 7th January 2020:

  • Students whose status is inactive/prepared outside and who have submitted petitions to School of Languages Directorate*
  • Students who are using their right to study for a second year at FDY and who have completed the survey on surveymonkey to School of Languages Directorate
  • Graduate students who have received approval from their institues

Location and Times:

WRITING & LISTENING     10.00 – 12:10  
READING                            13:15 – 14:45
LOCATION                          FMAN 1099

For the identification check to be done in time, we ask that students who will take the exam be at the exam hall 15-20 min. before the exam starts and that they bring some official identification which includes their photograph (such as a passport, identification card, driver’s license) with them.

Students should also make sure that they bring a pencil, eraser and any other necessary pieces of equipment with them.

The results of the ELAE will be announced on the external web page of Sabancı University. These results will be announced on Wednesday, January 8th at 9pm.

Graduate students will be informed of their ELAE results by their institues.

* a) Inactive/prepared outside students who want to continue at FDY should give a petition to the School of Languages Directorate by 9th of January 12 pm.

   b) A "Placement Exam" will be given to these students on the 10th of January at 10 am.

Ali Koşar will serve as editor in special issue

Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences member and SUNUM researcher Ali Kosar will serve as the editor in the special issue on “Recent Advances in Thermal Transport in Porous Media for Engineering Applications” to be published in the Elsevier journal Applied Thermal Engineering.

Ali Kosar will closely work with the Guest Editors and handle peer-review processes of the submitted manuscripts.

The second “Sabancı University Leading in Digital Technologies” event took place in İstanbul

The second “Sabancı University Leading in Digital Technologies: Cybersecurity, cryptography, blockchain” event hosted by Sabancı University Ankara Project Office took place on December 9th 2019.

At the opening of the event, Elif Tepeli, the manager of Sabancı University Ankara Project Office said “This is a follow-up event to a very similar one we held in Ankara a short while ago. We would like to take the opportunity to introduce our expertise in Digital Technologies to our partners in industry and the digital eco-system. At Sabancı University we are firm believers of market pull / research push strategy to better our academic abilities. We aim to improve our relationship with our industrial partners.”

President of Sabancı University, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Leblebici mentioned the necessity to act together with stakeholders and said “At Sabancı University we are advancing especially in digital technologies, data analytics and cyber security. We value the fact that our research in this area directly supports industry and society in general and we are working to create awareness in different layers of the eco-system. To share our expertise in the area and create new opportunities for cooperation is an important and valuable target for us”.

President of TÜBİTAK, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal underlined the importance of such events for creating the culture of cooperation, mentioning that especially the 11th Development Plan of Turkey prioritizes digital technologies. He also emphasized that such cooperations between industry and universities will help improve their contribution to the national economy.

Şirzen Yılmaz from Sabancı DX, Cüneyt Evirgen from Sabancı EDU and Banu Sarıoğlu on behalf of Turkish Cyber Security Cluster also contributed to the event. 

In his keynote speech, Dr. Mustafa Afyonluoğlu, senior expert on cybersecurity, e-governance and e-state, put forward the questions ‘cyber security for blockchain or blockchain for cyber security?’, ‘which professions will be negatively affected by blockchain technology’, ‘which sectors could make a leap forward with blockchain?’, ‘what new developments are talked about in the world’ and pointed to the need of trust between stakeholders. Sabancı University professor Dr. Erdinç Öztürk gave information on new generation blockchain infrastructure and talked about the details of MIT LCS35 crypto puzzle that was solved by Sabancı University team a short while ago.

An expert panel was organized as part of the event. Moderated by Dr. Selim Balcısoy, the participants of the panel, Dr. Albert Levi, Dr. Erdinç Öztürk, Dr. Kamer Kaya, Dr. Erkay Savaş and Dr. Orçun Çetin discussed the new developments in cybersecurity, cryptology and blockchain applications. 

Representatives from cybersecurity student club were also present at the event. Thematic face to face meetings between industry representatives and technology experts were held to explore potential collaboration areas.

FT Avrupa İşletme Okulları Sıralaması

This is the 16th annual Financial Times ranking of European Business Schools. It is a composite ranking based on the combined performance of Europe’s leading schools across the five main rankings of programmes published by the FT in 2019: MBA, Executive MBA, Masters in Management (MiM) and the two rankings of non-degree executive education programmes.

The ranking measures the quality of schools and the scope of programs. Evaluation criteria are: Salary and salary increase of alumni, open educations in executive development programs, customized programs, percentage of female faculty members, percentage of international faculty members and percentage of faculty members with doctorate degree.

SUNUM Researcher Meltem Sezen awarded at “Science as Art” competition

Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) researcher Meltem Sezen has been awarded for the second place in the “Science as Art” competition in the MRS 2019 Fall meeting in Boston, USA on 01-06 December 2019.

The image, titled as “Grand Canyon” was acquired and colored by Dr. Sezen in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), showing the surface of the ion-milled magnetic alloy sample.

Technological Arts Preservation

digitalSSM’s ‘Technological Arts Preservation’ project Continues with the conference on December 13 

The research project ‘Technological Arts Preservation’ introduced by Sabancı University and led by Sakıp Sabancı Museum’s archive and research space digitalSSM, continues with a conference on Friday, December 13th. Conference will be live streamed from youtube

The panel, which will be held in the SSM conference hall, begins with the talk titled ‘Pro-spective Archaeologies. Travelling through Deep Time of the Media into Traces of Time’ by Prof. Siegfried Zielinski, the Michel Foucault Professor of Media Archaeology and Techno-Culture at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee. Zielinski, who has published numerous books and essays mainly on the archaeology and variantology of the relations between art and media, will focus on the need for an ARCHIVIST-IN-RESIDENCE program in his speech.

In the second part of the panel, Daniel Heiß (Software Engineer), Morgane Stricot (Senior Media and Digital Art Conservator) and Matthieu Vlaminck (Junior Media and Digital Art Conservator) from ZKM (Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe) and PAMAL Group (Preservation & Art – Media Archaeology Lab) will deliver a speech titled ‘Media Archaeological Reconstruction of Media and Digital Artworks: Practical Case Studies.’ Through practical case studies including artworks Virtual Sculpture (1981) by Jeffrey Shaw, Yuppie Ghetto With Watchdog (1989-90) by Paul Garrin and Wipe Cycle (1972) by Frank Gillette and Ira Schneider, the talk will focus on how media archaeology is applied and evaluate its achievement in fulfilling its aims.

The ‘Technological Arts Preservation’ team is composed of Sabancı University Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Faculty Member Selçuk Artut, Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Member Cemal Yılmaz and Sakıp Sabancı Museum Digital Preservation Specialist Osman Serhat Karaman.

The Conference will be held in English with simultaneous translation to Turkish and admission is free of charge.

Assoc. Prof. Şerif Aziz Şimşir from Sabancı Business School, Asst. Prof. Eralp Demir, Assoc. Prof. Gözde İnce, Asst. Prof. Lütfi Taner Tunç, Asst. Prof. Öznur Taştan and Asst. Prof. Turgay Bayraktar from Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences were awarded with Research Incentive Award.

Sabancı University has received the highest number of winners among all institutions with 6 Research Incentive Awards. Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 17.00 at Hall A of METU Culture and Convention Center.

Research Incentive Award: This prestigious award is given to young researchers (who have not reached the age of 40 as of the first day of the applied year) who remarkably contribute to the development of one of the fields of science through their research or achieved to provide solution of our country issues.

Every year, the METU Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation rewards the efforts of distinguished scientists by recognizing their outstanding research and contributions in all fields of sciences, certifying their competencies and encouraging future talented researchers.
