“Nano-buckling” device attracts great interest in Physics and Nanotechnology

A report of a novel nano-scale device, designed and fabricated entirely in Turkey, has just been published in Physical Review Letters, one of the most prestigious journals in the field of Physics. The study was also selected as an Editor’s Suggestion and highlighted with a news piece in the Physics websites of the American Physics Society and phys.org.

The study was undertaken by the team of Dr. Selim Hanay, one of the first graduates of Sabancı University, who is currently working at Bilkent University Department of Mechanical Engineering. Meanwhile, a significant part of the prototype device fabrication was accomplished in Sabanci University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM). The study demonstrates for the first time that a nano-sized silicon beam can be buckled in a controlled manner with cleverly designed nano electro-mechanical system based electro-static architecture.

SUNUM Nanofabrication Team Leader Dr. Cenk Yanık was mainly responsible for the nanofabrication process of the devices.  Reporting on the project, Dr. Yanık said, “it is very exciting and I am proud to be involved in this kind of first-class research, where novel concept designs are demonstrated for the first time in the world. SUNUM has a state-of-the-art 100 kV electron beam lithography system (the only such system open to all users in Turkey), which played a critical role in the fabrication of this world-class nano-scale prototype device. SUNUM is pleased to provide such production services with its expert technical staff.”

Sabancı University in Graphene Flagship Core 3

Sabancı University Integrated Manufacturing Research and Application Center (SU IMC) Researchers Assoc. Prof. Burcu Saner Okan was granted a new research project, within the scope of FLAG-ERA Program.

Burcu Saner Okan ve Yusuf Menceloğlu

FLAG-ERA projects, which are used as an application tool within the framework of the European Union Framework Programs under Horizon 2020, have been developed and integrated into the work plans of the Graphene and Human Brain Flagship Projects by providing the coordination between national and regional research programs in countries that are members of the European Union and candidate for European Union membership.

The Management Panel of the Graphene Flagship has approved GO-FOR-WATER project as a Partnering Project of the Graphene Flagship and the project will start on April 1, 2020 (the start date of the Graphene Flagship Core 3 project). Sabancı University will join the Flagship as an associated member in the Core 3 project.

About FLAG-ERA

FLAG-ERA gathers most regional and national funding organisations (NRFOs) in Europe with the goal of supporting the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship concept and more specifically, the FET Flagship initiatives Graphene and Human Brain Project (HBP). FLAG-ERA contributes to the construction of the two Flagship initiatives on graphene and human brain research, and also offers support to the four non-selected pilots to progress towards their goals with adapted means.

Business Against Intimate Partner Violence Book Has Published

Business Against Intimate Partner Violence/A Case of Participatory Action Research and Social Action book addresses the Business Against Domestic Violence (BADV) project launched by the Corporate Governance Forum of Turkey (CGFT).

The goal of BADV is to mobilize companies to combat intimate partner violence (IPV) in Turkey. The project was realized in a collaborative partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with the support of Sabancı Foundation and in co-operation with Turkish Industrialists and Business Association (TUSIAD).

The book is divided into two sections. Section 1, which focuses on the project itself, frames the elimination of IPV as an SDG target, and provides a detailed account of the project’s motivation, underlying research, project organization, implementation, and outcome. The question of why gender equality and IPV matter for business is also addressed. Lastly, the role of business schools and management scholars in creating practical and actionable knowledge to achieve development goals is discussed, based on the BADV experience. In turn, Section 2 explores the background of the project and sheds a multidisciplinary light on the local context.

The main objective of the book is to encourage business schools and business organizations to form partnerships in pursuit of Goal-5 and other SDG targets, helping to create actionable knowledge and prompt social action. The book presents IPV from all relevant perspectives and focuses on Turkey, a key emerging economy and G-20 country.

Marina Abramović + MAI

Akış / Flux, an exhibition featuring Marina Abramović + MAI opens at Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM), along with its conjunction at Akbank Sanat on January 31, 2020 with the support of Akbank.

The exhibition will constitute Turkey’s first large-scale retrospective of Marina Abramović, who is one of the pioneers of performance art in the world, and will be open to visit until April 26, 2020 between 12:00 - 20:00, six days a week. Akış / Flux, realized with the joint efforts of SSM and Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), will introduce video and photographic documentation of performances by the artist, along with live performances developed with MAI and artists who were brought together by an open call and invitation, as well as a section dedicated to the Abramović Method. Concurrent with the exhibition Akış / Flux at SSM, Akbank Sanat will host a documentary series presenting the history of works by Abramović, as well a video gallery featuring numerous works in performance, aiming to explore the legacy of performance art still informing its present.

Marina Abramović

The exhibition at SSM consists of three sections. The first section will feature video and photographic documentation of Marina Abramović’s iconic performances, loaned from private collections and institutions, to represent the artist’s 50-year career. Akış / Flux aims to introduce and support performance art, which is the general term developed in the 1970s to define the non-object, immaterial and time-dependent form of art that is widely performed today as an interdisciplinary social process, encouraging art audiences in Turkey to experience performance art firsthand.

The second section of the exhibition will present performance projects both submitted to an open call launched in August 2019 for practicing artists working in all forms of performance, as well as artists invited to participate in the exhibition. The long durational live performances will be taking place alternately within a three-month schedule for eight hours between 12:00 - 20:00 every day the museum is open to visit.

Akış / Flux will be concluded by the section dedicated to “The Abramović Method”, where visitors will be invited to participate in a unique experience through exercises Abramović developed for the public. Created over decades of research on performance and immaterial art, Marina Abramović deems “The Method” to be her masterpiece, and the audience will hold a central place in the section where they will be presented with new experiences. “The Abramović Method” is a large scale, public participatory event joining people in a communal experience to connect with oneself and with each other, and an exploration of being present in both time and space through exercises that focus on breath, motion, stillness, and concentration.
