“Ships off Sarayburnu” painting at Sabancı University

The “Ships off Sarayburnu” painting of Davit Çıraciyan (1839-1907?), a part of the Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum Collection, is available for viewing at the Information Center.

This 1895 painting is a naïve, elegant, almost photographic depiction of the view from the coast of Sarayburnu, a common inspiration of Western artists at the time.  It is different from the –mainly Parisian– style of the time in that it depicts Istanbul from a documentary perspective.

The painting will be available for viewing at the Information Center between February 28th and May 27th, 2011.

Applications for exchange programs began. Have you applied yet?

Applications for exchange programs in the 2011-2012 academic year began for students who want to get to know other cultures more closely, make friends from all over the world, and experience education at different universities.  Applications may be submitted between the 1st and 28th of February.  The Sabancı University International Relations Office is a good source of information for aspiring exchange students, and helps them make informed choices. Burak Arıkan, director of the International Relations Office, explains the benefits of exchange programs: Parallel to the dizzying rate at which technology and communication develop nowadays, school and student profiles change at every stage of education.  This change is a requirement.  Today’s individuals are expected to be multifaceted, and embrace ongoing change and development in a multicultural, wide range of interests and abilities. Contemporary concepts like “international” “intercultural” “interdisciplinary” and “interpersonal” are all based on interaction, and are the stepping stones to success in higher education and professional life alike.  The international relations offices of universities play a key role here.  Students should know that one of the key experiences which support the wide perspective these concepts bring upon students and the ability to empathize and think differently – abilities that will help them regardless of the field they will work in the future – is exchange programs.  Thanks to international mobility, students live and learn how life, education and human relations are different in other countries.  This is very significant in making them more knowledgeable, productive and tolerant.  As Sabancı University, we view internationalization as key to our future policy, and strive to increase the number of international cooperation agreements, currently at 300, for higher numbers of incoming and outgoing exchange students every year. Held by the CFA Society of Istanbul in association with Garanti Yatırım Menkul Değerler A.Ş., the Global Investment Research Challenge Turkey required teams from Bilgi, Bilkent, Sabancı and Istanbul Technical Universities submitted an investment report on Trakya Cam to a jury panel composed of investment experts and executives in the sector.  Members of the jury were Credit Suisse Turkey General Manager Uğur Bayar, Libera Portfolio Manager Didem Gorbon and Garanti Yatırım Research Department Vice President Mahmut Kaya.

The team of Sabancı University Masters in Finance students met with Trakya Cam executives to gather information about the company.  Then they used the financial tables of the company and the forecasts they prepared in the light of the data they gathered to create theoretical financial tables for the future years of the company.  Based on these tables and financial valuation methods, they calculated the ideal current trading price for Trakya Cam securities.  The study included qualitative assessments of market situation and company structure, and quantitative assessments based on financial techniques.

Global Investment Research Challenge
Held by the CFA Institute, the Global Investment Research Challenge gathers students, investment industry professionals, publicly traded companies, and corporate sponsors together locally, regionally, and globally for a real world competition.  Students are required to act as financial analysts to collect information, evaluate data and prepare reports based on their findings about a selected company.  The local organizer is the CFA Society of Istanbul, which organizes the competition and appoints mentors to the competing students.

The competition is important because it enables students to undertake a full-scale company valuation project and to apply the theoretical knowledge they gain in class.  In accordance with the requirements of the competition, students are allowed to receive minimal assistance from their professors or other sources outside the school.
