Applied Capacity Development Program for Executives

Sabancı University Executive Development Unit (EDU) holds a training program titled “Executives and Projects” as part of the Sabancı Foundation Executive Capacity Development Program. The project aims to introduce the philosophy of business development and project management to school administrators, expand their understanding of stakeholders, involve parents and teachers in their efforts, and transform their school to a brand in the district, region or province.  Among the objectives of the project are ensuring the ownership of the school by the parents, preventing gender discrimination, transforming the institution, district and the province into brands, creating awareness in the society, establishing and sustaining community ties, using information technologies and making development plans that will realize the targets in strategic plans.

Programs were designed based on the needs determined in association with the Education Directorates of the respective cities and structured to cater to the needs of adult learners.  Sessions are held in a workshop format to convey knowledge and share experiences.

The program is taking place between September 2010 and May 2011, and the majority of participants are the principals and assistant principals of schools within the Purple Certificate program.  Trainings are held in 6 provinces, namely Van, Trabzon, Kars, Şanlıurfa, Izmir and Nevşehir, and 150 participants have attended training to date.  The program is designed in stages of a two-day interactive seminar and a 120-day project, and the concepts of leader, administrator and manager are supported with case studies.

The program is based on management theories and learning by doing.  Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and subjects are supported with group work and presentations.  Participants understand their preferences and management styles by taking a number of tests.

“Building a project for a real initiative” is handled in 3 stages and aims to help participants view their institutions from a different perspective, develop their management styles, and understand different ways for adding value to and improving the success rate of their institutions.  At the first stage, participants set up their project teams, prepare project plans and submit them to EDU training associates within one month of the interactive seminar.  EDU and Purple Certificate associates examine each project and give feedback on development opportunities to its owners.  At the second stage, following an agreement reached via email and phone communication, participants begin to shape and realize their projects.  One-on-one or group support is given to include Purple Certificate themes in projects.  Progress is reported to EDU associates by way of forms designed by EDU every two weeks, and at the end of the 120-day period, a report outlining the final status of the project is prepared.  At the last phase of the program, all projects are assessed by a group of trainers and consultants, and presented.

Sabancı University students go to Singapore for “Tea Talks with CEOs”

Sabancı University Economics and Management Club members will travel to Singapore between the 23rd and 30th of January to meet CEOs for the first time in that country.  This will be the 5th “Tea Talks with CEOs” event abroad, and will bring students together with the leading figures in the business, politics and media circles of Singapore.

The “Tea Talks with CEOs” series of events will take Sabancı University Economics and Management Club members to Singapore this time, bringing them together with the prominent figures of Singapore’s leading institutions in a casual setting.  This will be the first time students will have the opportunity to take a closer look into the business world of a country in the Far East.

Making a significant change in course and heading, the team will travel to Singapore between January 23rd and 30th.  16 students will take part in the conversations whose guests include McKinsey & Co., Southeast Asia Advisory Board Member and Partner Jonathan Auerbach, Allianz Singapore CEO Kevin Leong, Aviva Singapore CEO Simon Newman, SingTel International CEO Hui Weng Cheong, ST Engineering General Manager and CEO Tan Pheng Hock, SICC General Manager Phillip Overmyer, SBF CEO Teng Theng Dar and MediaCorp General Manager Teo Ming Kian, DBS Singapore CEO Sim Lim, and Leo Burnett Singapore and Malaysia CEO Tan Kien Eng.

Having met with close to 130 CEOs to date, students say that gaining insight and taking recommendations from the proven leaders of the business world is an asset that cannot be found in any textbook, and that the opportunity to ask questions to and get candid responses from CEOs in a casual setting contributes greatly to their personal development.

Tea Talks with CEOs Team’s comments on Singapore meetings
Members of the Sabancı University Economics and Management Club have held Tea Talks with CEOs in Istanbul, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and France, and had the opportunity to talk to the leaders of the business world in Turkey and Europe.  For the Singapore leg of their journey, the students say, “Our goal as an organization is to hear the success stories of leading figures and gain a closer understanding of different work cultures across the world.  In this respect, Singapore completes the Far East section of the global mosaic.  As a society that is built on the fusion of differences, this country will tell us what it means to be a global citizen and manager.”

‘Transforming global management practice in Eastern Europe and the Middle East’: MIT Sloan to collaborate with Turkey’s Sabanci School of Management

‘Transforming global management practice in Eastern Europe and the Middle East’: MIT Sloan to collaborate with Turkey’s Sabanci School of Management

Sabanci students and professors to study in Cambridge, MIT Sloan faculty to teach and students will participate in entrepreneurship projects in Turkey

Cambridge, Mass., Istanbul, Turkey, January 21, 2011— MIT Sloan School of Management and Sabanci University’s Sabanci School of Management (Sabanci SOM) today announced an alliance intended to strengthen the Turkish school’s capacity in management education and bolster its industry outreach in Eastern Europe and the Middle East while exposing MIT Sloan faculty and students to learning opportunities in a critically important region of the world.

The five-year collaboration between MIT Sloan and Sabanci SOM includes classes and other training for Executive MBA students in Cambridge and presentations by MIT Sloan faculty at Sabanci’s campus in Istanbul. The joint venture takes a practice-oriented approach to management, which is one of the hallmarks of MIT Sloan and reflects Sabanci’s approach to education for practical application.

“As a leading educational institution in an exciting and rapidly developing region, Sabanci University was an excellent choice for MIT Sloan’s first collaboration in Eastern Europe and the Middle East,” said David C. Schmittlein, Dean of MIT Sloan. “We are honored to have the opportunity to engage with Sabanci’s outstanding faculty and students with the shared and mutually beneficial goal of transforming global management practice.”

MIT Sloan's expertise in stimulating innovation, combined with Sabanci SOM’s twin goals of training entrepreneurial leaders for fast-moving economies and increasing the sustainability of enterprises in Turkey are a natural fit, said Nakiye Avdan Boyacigiller, the Dean of the Sabanci SOM. “In its first decade, the Sabanci School of Management has built a reputation as one of Turkey’s top business schools. Our goal for our second decade is to internationalize in order to become one of the top business schools in the region,” she said.  “By entering into a long-term collaboration with MIT Sloan, we hope not only to provide superior programs for our Turkish students, but also to increase our attraction for students from the broader region. At the same time collaborative research between MIT Sloan and Sabanci faculty will increase our knowledge of the managerial challenges facing enterprises of this region and other emerging markets.”

Sabancı University Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı said, “I hope this cooperation between MIT Sloan and Sabancı University SOM is the first step towards greater achievements.  This cooperation will make the Sabanci School of Management a center of excellence and attraction, and a management school that has great influence across the region.  This brings additional responsibilities to us all.  We have confidence in the support of the Turkish business world, and believe that global companies investing in Turkey and the near region will utilize the resources provided by this cooperation to the maximum possible extent.”

As part of the collaboration, each year nearly 50 Executive MBA students from Sabanci SOM will spend two weeks on an educational exchange program at MIT Sloan learning about the U.S. business environment. Students will visit companies in the Boston area, attend lectures from MIT Sloan faculty, and complete a Global Business Project in conjunction with MIT Sloan’s Leadership Center. In addition, the collaboration makes Sabanci MBA students eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Science in Management Studies degree program at MIT Sloan, which they can do in two semesters.
Throughout the academic year, faculty from MIT Sloan will provide guest lectures to Sabanci SOM programs on subjects from data models and decision-making, to innovation, to leadership. These exchanges aim to increase MIT Sloan’s knowledge of Turkey and the region, and deepen its ties with the worldwide academic community.

The collaboration also seeks to build the capability of the already strong, but young faculty at Sabanci. Each year, Sabanci SOM fellows will be a part of MIT Sloan in Cambridge, joining other professors from around the world from Sloan’s partner schools. The Faculty Fellows will participate in activities designed to boost teaching effectiveness, improve research, and enhance scholarship.  Sabanci SOM will join MIT Sloan’s network of leading business schools around the world including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Korea.

The announcement of the alliance was made at the Sakip Sabanci Museum and hosted by President Nihat Berker, before an audience of hundreds of Istanbul’s most influential members of the business and higher education communities. Güler Sabanci, chairperson of the Sabanci University board of trustees and family-controlled Sabanci Holdings, one of the largest industrial and financial conglomerates in Turkey, sponsored the event.

SUOyuncuları meet with children in various cities with their new project

Sabancı University Drama Club members will go on a tour of Anatolia with their new children’s play “Düşler Bahçesi – The Garden of Dreams.”  Bringing together civic involvement with theater, the ensemble will perform for children in Kayseri, Adana and Hatay who have never seen a play before.

Sabancı University Drama Club “SUOyuncuları” will perform their new children’s play “Düşler Bahçesi-The Garden of Dreams” for children in Kayseri, Adana and Hatay between the 23rd and 28th of January, 2011.  Aiming to go where no drama ensemble has gone before, the students will perform three times a day and reach approximately 6000 children, leaving them with fond memories.

To SUOyuncuları, their project brings together civic involvement and a branch of art: “There are millions of adults and children who have never seen a play, in Istanbul as well as all across Anatolia.  We want to show children what kind of an art drama is, and to reach them with our play.  We realized that such projects were few across Turkey, so we decided to perform in various provinces of Anatolia.  We will show everyone what a university drama club is capable of, and what benefits it could bring.  We will have reached children in various cities and created a different experience for them.”

Schedule: The ensemble will start the tour on January 23rd, perform in Kayseri on the 24th and 25th, in Adana on the 26th and in Hatay on the 27th, and return to Istanbul on the 28th.

The project involves 8 members of SUOyuncuları, who are engineering, economics and social sciences students, and is sponsored by Ayhanlar Holding.  In the future, the project may expand to other regions and provinces.
