ENG101 right in the summer for new FR students - TODAY is the last day

Students who completed the Foundation Development Year at the end of the Spring Semester, satisfy conditions for sufficiency in English Language and have not taken any Undergraduate courses until this point are eligible to take "ENG 101- Freshman English I" in Summer School. 

Those who want to register for this course should apply to the Foundation Development Directorate (FENS G016) between June 14 and June 21, 2013. 

Applications will be forwarded to the Faculties for approval by the Faculty Council and upon approval course registration will be completed by SR and students will be informed.

Summer Semester Dorm Payment and Accommodation

Housing placement results for the summer semester have been announced on 21.06.2013, and you can log on to http://www.sabanciuniv.edu.sis and use the 'Dormitory Application Results' application under Student&Financial Aid-Housing menus to find out your hall and room numbers.

Housing fees for the summer semester will be paid between 21.06.2013 and 25.06.2013 to the Akbank Sabancı University branch, account  (713) - 48754. (IBAN no: TR07 0004 6007 1388 8000 0487 54) (Please ensure that your name and student number are recorded on the deposit slip)

Having made their payments;

Foundational Development Year students may apply to the dormitory managers with their payment slips starting on 25.06.2013 to enter their rooms.

Undergraduate and graduate students starting on 30.06.2013.

Since rooms will be in preparation for the summer semester, students will not be allowed to enter rooms prior to above dates.

We would like to remind you once again of the housing fees according to the programme you will be enrolled in for the summer semester:

Undergraduate - Graduate students which stay at dormitory for that compulsory internship, assistantship, project: (In case of housing for 15 days or less in a month, the housing fee will be reduced by half. In case of housing for more than 15 days, the full rate will apply)

Monthly Financial Aid Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

MONTHLY FINANCIAL AID SCHOLARSHIP:

  • The Financial Aid Scholarship covers monthly payment and it is not reciprocated. The duration for Financial Aid Scholarship is at most nine months (October-June) in an academic year. And it is valid for the awarded academic year.
  •  The student should be a Turkish citizen and be registered in full-time status in a SU Undergraduate Diploma programs in order to benefit from the Financial Aid Scholarship.
  • 2013 - 2014 academic year Monthly Financial Aid amount will be 300 TL.
  • Reimbursements of students who withdraw from the University by their own volition prior to graduation or students dismissed from the university due to academic failure or disciplinary issues are made to the University at once within one month after the date of withdrawal.
  • Monthly Financial Aid Scholarship is provided by the monthly deductions from the salaries of SU employees, donations of individuals and/or legal entities and other contributions donated to Main Endowment Scholarship Fund and awarding students are specified after the evaluations of Scholarship Committee. As the source of the fund is limited, only real in need students are expected to apply.

 Scope Of the Scholarship:

  • 300 TL monthly stipend for 9 months (October-June)  

 

SIEMENS MONTHLY FINANCIAL AID SCHOLARSHIP:

 Application Conditions:

  • Being sophomore at the beginning of the 2013-2014 Academic year.
  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA,
  • Having T.C. citizenship
  • Can’t simultaneously hold other scholarships funded by other private institutions,
  • Completing the application form in the due dates.

 Scope Of the Scholarship:

  • 300 TL monthly stipend for 9 months (October-June)  

Contunity Conditions for the Scholarship :

  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA at the end of each academic year,
  • Should be graduated in the normal education period,
  • Not having any disciplinary suspension until graduation.

SAKIP SABANCI ENCOURAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship will be granted for 2013 - 2014 academic year; Fall and Spring terms, in a limited quota.

 

 Application Conditions:

  • Being enrolled in SU undergraduate programs at least 2 terms except FDY (on leave terms, are excluded),
  • Accomplish at least 30 credits,
  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA at the end of Spring term in which the evaluation will be done,
  • Being in real need for tuition expenses,
  • Not having any disciplinary suspension in the last academic year in which the evaluations will be done,
  • The Scholarship Committee will evaluate the situation of the students who have disciplinary punishment as warning in the last academic year in which the evaluations will be done.

 

SIEMENS TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP


 Application Conditions:  

  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA,
  • Having T.C. citizenship
  • Being enrolled in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Mechatronics undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences
  • Being prefarebly girl or disabled
  • Can’t simultaneously hold other scholarships funded by other private institutions,
  • Being in real need for tuition expenses,
  • Completing the documents and application form in the due dates.

  

Scope Of the Scholarship:

  • Tuition fee
  • Dormitory (Room for 4 person)
  • 300 TL monthly stipend for 9 months (October-June)  

 

Contunity Conditions for the Scholarship :

  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA at the end of each academic year,
  • Should be graduated in the normal education period,

  HACI SABANCI SCHOLARSHIP


 Application Conditions:

  • Should have at least 3.5 GPA,
  • Can’t simultaneously hold other scholarships funded by other private institutions,
  • Being in real need for tuition expenses,
  • Completing the documents and application form in the due dates.

 

 Scope Of the Scholarship:

  • Tuition fee
  • Dormitory (Room for 4 person)
  • 300 TL monthly stipend for 9 months (October-June)  
  • 320 TL book support

 

Contunity Conditions for the Scholarship :

  • Should have at least 2.5 GPA at the end of each academic year,
  • Should be graduated in the normal education period,

Important Note for ENG 101-102 Exemption

You have to take the June 2013 ELAE or September 2013 ELAE for the exemption from ENG 101 and/or ENG 102. You can not get the exemption with TOEFL, IELTS or similar exams. We remind you that the June ELAE is on June 19th.

Exemption From ENG 102 and ENG 102

Students who fulfill the outlined requirements are entitled for exemption from “Freshman English I & II” (ENG 101-102)

YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE ELAE STAGE 1&2 FOR THE EXEMPTION FROM THE FIRST YEAR UNIVERSITY COURSES. YOU CANNOT GET THE EXEMPTION WITH TOEFL, IELTS OR SIMILAR EXAMS.

Students are entitled for exemption*

  • only from ENG 101, if they get C-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE June or September 2013) and at least 3 from one of "English Language and Composition" or "English Literature and Composition" sections in "Advanced Placement"(AP***)
  • only from ENG 101, if they get an A-SL from the 2nd stage of English Language Assesment Exam (ELAE June or September 2013) and at least a B+ from the “Freshman English Exemption Exam (FEEE101****)

Exam Application

If the student chooses to be exempted from ENG 101/102, he/she is required to submit a written statement to the Foundations Development Directorate (Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences G016 room) regarding his/her acceptance of the grade shown in tables  no later than the final workday of the first week of classes.(date) Unless a written statement is given to the FDD within the above indicated deadline, the student is required to take the course at the first semester that it is offered in.

TÜBA-GEBİP Awards Ceremony

Five members of Sabancı University faculty receive awards from the Turkish Academy of Sciences

2012 winners of the Turkish Academy of Sciences’ Program to Reward Young Scientists (TÜBA-GEBİP) were announced.  Five Sabancı University faculty members received TÜBA-GEBİP Outstanding Achievement Awards. Five of the Turkish Academy of Sciences’ Program to Reward Young Scientists awards in 2012 were given to Sabancı University faculty.

Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences members Gözde İnce, Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci, Erdal Toprak, Murat Çokol and School of Management faculty member Işın Güler  Outstanding Achievement Awards by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA).

The TÜBA Program to Reward Young Scientists provides financial support to the research efforts of selected scientists below 37 years of age for a period of three years.  This year, awards were given to 28 scientists.
Prizes were presented at an awards ceremony on Saturday, June 8 at the Turkish Academy of Sciences in Ankara.

About the award-winning Sabancı University faculty:


Assistant Professor Gözde İnce: Assistant Professor Gözde İnce received a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Boğaziçi University in 2001.  She completed her doctorate at the Boston University Mechanical Engineering Department in 2008, and worked as a researcher at the Brookhaven National Laboratory during her studies.  İnce undertook postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Chemical Engineering Department between 2008 and 2010.  İnce’s doctorate research focused on the x-ray assessment of the formal changes in semiconductor surfaces.  Her postdoctoral work was on the production and applications of stimulus-sensitive polymer thincoats and nanostructures.  She received the L'Oreal Turkey Fellowship for Young Female Scientists in 2012 with her work on polymer nanotubes.  Assistant Professor Gözde İnce is currently a member of the Sabancı University Material Science and Engineering program.

Assistant Professor Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci: Assistant Professor Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci received his doctorate from the Istanbul Technical University Polymer Science and Technology program in 2007.  He completed part of his doctorate studies in the MIT Material Science and Engineering program as a fellow of TÜBİTAK NATO-A2, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Istanbul Technical University Office of the President.  He then conducted postdoctoral research in the Chemical Engineering and Material Science and Engineering departments of Masschusetts Institute of Technology between September 2007 and September 2010.  His doctorate research focused on electrochemical systems, conductor polymers, thincoats and surface chemistry, while his postdoctoral work was on thincoat nanocomposites, test osmosis membranes, stimulus-sensitive materials and supercapacitors.  He has made significant contributions to super-soaking and non-soaking coatings.  Assistant Professor Fevzi Çakmak Cebeci has been a member of Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences in the Material Science and Engineering program since September 2010.



Assistant Professor Erdal Toprak: After completing his undergraduate and graduate degrees in the Physicsa Department of Boğaziçi University, Toprak began his doctorate on Calculated Biology and Biophysics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 2003.  During his studies, he developed precision microscopic techniques that enabled viewing the working mechanism of motor proteins, and won the Eugene Rabinowitz Fellowship.  Toprak completed his doctorate in 2007 and continued on to postdoctoral studies on system biology at the Harvard Medical School until May 2011.  The “Morbidostat” device he developed to examine the formation of drug resistance in bacteria, as well as the studies he conducted using the device were published in the Nature Genetics and Nature Protocols journals.  Since May 2011, Erdal Toprak has been a member of Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences where he works on slowing the onset of drug resistance in bacteria with personally-developed devices, supported by the Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, EMBO Installation Grant and Human Frontiers Science Program Research Grant.



Assistant Professor Işın Güler:  Işın Güler received bachelor’s and MBA degrees from the Middle East Technical University Business School and completed her doctorate on strategy in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.  She worked as an assistant professor at Boston University and the University of North Carolina.  She won the Academy of Management IDEA ‘Thought Leader’ Award and Best Dissertation Award with her research on the investment decisions of risk capital companies, and the American Sociological Association Best Article Award with her work on the international expansion of organizational practices.  Her publications have appeared in reputable international journals, receiving almost 300 citations.  Güler has been a member of Sabancı University School of Management since 2010, where she continues her research and lectures on strategic management and innovation.

Assistant Professor Murat Çokol: Çokol received his undergraduate degree from Bilkent University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in 1999, and completed his graduate degree in Columbia University’s Biological Sciences Department in 2000, going on to complete his doctorate in 2006.  As part of his postdoctoral studies, he first worked on quantitative models for the analysis of scientific fraud as a National Library Fellow in the Biomedical Informatics Department of Columbia University, and then studied the understanding and prediction of drug interactions in the light of other biological data at the Harvard Medical School as a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health.  He joined the Sabancı University Biological Sciences and Bioengineering Program in 2010.
Çokol is a co-editor of the Frontiers of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology journal and a referee for the Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Molecular Systems Biology, Nature Chemical Biology, PLOS Biology, PLOS Computational Biology and Scientometrics journals.  Çokol has a published US patent application and 10 articles in journals covered by International Citation Indexes, for which he has received more than 1000 citations.  Çokol has presented almost 20 papers in international conferences.

Excitement Swells for 2013 Commencement

Sabancı University will host the commencement of its 14th graduate class and 11th undergraduate class on Sunday, June 23, 2013.



Board of Trustees Chair Güler Sabancı and President A. Nihat Berker will be attending the commencement ceremony, where the awards established in honor of the late Gürsel Sönmez, a member of the Sabancı University faculty who passed away in 2006, will be given.

Live music by Ayhan Sicimoğlu will follow hat-tossing, and tweets under the
#sumezuniyet 2013 hashtag will be shown on screens around the cocktail area.

The Commencement Ceremony will be live broadcast at map.sabanciuniv.edu

Closing lecture by Daron Acemoğlu

As part of the commencement events, the Academic Year Closing Lecture will be given on Friday, June 21, 2013 by Daron Acemoğlu, Professor of Economics at MIT, a Nobel candidate and holder of the John Bates Clark Prize, known as the “Nobel for economists under 40,” and one of the Top 10 Cited Economists according to the IDEAS/RePEc research database.

In his lecture titled “Why Countries Fail” Daron Acemoğlu will discuss income disparity around the world.  Acemoğlu will also explain the economic and political development in Turkey and the role of the well-educated youth in the development process.

Daron Acemoğlu will place a commemorative brick in the alumni wall after the lecture.



Wins First Prize with Invention

Held by Türk Ekonomi Bankası (TEB) with the slogan “Invent Something” to encourage innovation in the finance industry and implement innovative, creative projects, the 6th TEB Convention of Ideas took place with students, new graduates and TEB clients.  The awards ceremony was held on Friday, May 17.

This year’s theme in the TEB Convention of Ideas was Innovation for Changing Consumer Trends.  The Convention began with the introductory remarks of TEB General Manager Varol Civil, followed with speeches by Istanbul Bilgi University Next Academy Director Levent Erden, Markafoni Founding Partner Tolga Tatari, Etohum Investment Management Chairman Burak Büyükdemir and entrepreneur İsmail Berber.  The Convention of Ideas was open to viewer interaction via Twitter and was live cast on Facebook.

Sabancı University student wins first prize
In the Student-New Graduate category, Sabancı University Economics student Emre Tekin won the first prize of TL 15,000; second prize of TL 7500 went to Galatasaray University Industrial Engineering students Samet Kayataş and Umut Yılmaz, and third prize of TL 5000 was shared by Karabük University Industrial Engineering student Ece Ülker and Kadir Has University graduate student Bora Büyüktürk.  Top three students also won an MBA grant at Bahçeşehir University and all finalists received mini laptop computers.  The Special Jury Award went to high school senior student Sezer Aksoy for an innovative project.

In the Client category, Electrical Engineer Rıza Cem İmre won the first prize of TL 15,000 and a trip to the Roland Garros Tennis Tournament in Paris; Science and Technology teacher Ferhat Baştürk won the second prize of TL 7500; and Salim Yılmaz won the third prize of TL 5000.  All finalists received mini laptop computers.
