Turkey's Favorite University 2018

Bloomberg Businessweek’s “Favorite Universities 2018” survey named Sabancı University Turkey’s favorite university once again.

Bloomberg Businessweek, in association with Realta Consulting, conducted the “Favorite Universities 2018" survey with 28,214 students from 113 universities between December 2017 and April 2018. Sabancı University had been named “Turkey's Favorite University” by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as well.

58 questions including 4 open-ended were addressed to the students under 12 topics such as “Faculty”, “Academic Support”, “Evaluation and Feedback”, “Self-Improvement”, “Social Environment”, “Location, Transportation and Facilities”, “Student Services”, “Alumni Association”, “Career and Internship” and “General Satisfaction”.

The survey was promoted via career centers, student clubs, social media, posters, and emailing. Universities with fewer than 750 students were excluded from the survey.  Findings were assessed using t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe test, and analyses of correlation and regression, and each question was graded on a scale of 50.

The Synergy Within Us: the 1st Internal Education Conference

The 1st Internal Education Conference, open to educators from all Sabancı University faculties and programs, will take place on May 23 and 24 at the Cinema Hall.  All current and future teaching members of Sabancı University are invited to the Conference.

Our student reporter, Can Tamer, reports below the interview with Foundations Development Directorate instructors and the Conference organizers, Yuki Kaneko and Süphan Bakkal.

How did the idea of this conference emerge?

We have been teaching the NS 101 and 102 courses for a long time, for which we employ innovative teaching methods. We share these innovative approaches and their impacts on our students in various external education conferences. There we often find other Sabancı University instructors presenting their teaching approaches, which made us realize that we had no internal platform to share these variety of great teaching practices within our University.  This prompted us to organize the 1st Internal Education Conference, in order to build a sustainable platform where we can share the practices taking place at our University and our experiences regarding them. We hope that the platform will help us uncover the synergy within us.

What is the purpose of this conference?

The purpose of the 1st Internal Education Conference is to share various teaching and learning practices. We hope to initiate a platform where we can share good teaching practices, whether conventional or innovative. We believe that the emerging synergy will enable us to synchronize the general approach to education at Sabancı University and improve collaboratively.

Can you talk about the keynote speakers and what they will share?

The keynote speaker of the first day will be Professor Kürşat Çağıltay from Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Education, and the invited speaker of the second day will be Associate Professor Nevra Seggie from Boğaziçi University, Faculty of Education.

Both speakers will discuss how similar education and sharing practices are implemented in their respective institutions, as well as other examples from Turkey and the world. We believe that learning about practices in other universities will have a positive impact on our own process.

To have a better perspective of what is going on in terms of teaching, the 1st conference is open only to teaching members of the University. We plan to make this an annual event and invite participation of our students starting next year. It is important that our students also become a part of this process.

We thank Yuki Kaneko and Süphan Bakkal for their effort on organizing the conference and sharing this information.

PowerUp Turkey finals held

The Turkey Country Finals of the PowerUp! Competition held by EIT InnoEnergy in Turkey and 23 European countries for startups in energy and clean technologies featured 10 startups who were chosen for their innovative work in clean energy and environmentally-friendly technologies. The finals were held at the Istanbul Sabancı Center in association with Sabancı University, EIT InnoEnergy's only partner in Turkey.  The winning startup was Reengen founded by Şahin Çağlayan and Utku Simitli, and the runner-up was Momentum Ar-Ge founded by Rahmi Erdem Yıldız.

The 4th PowerUp! Competition held by EIT InnoEnergy received submissions from 299 energy-based startups from Turkey and 23 other countries from Central and Eastern Europe. The majority of the submissions were from Turkey, and PowerUp! Turkey Country Finals were hosted by the Sabancı University Startup Company League (SUCool) at the Sabancı Center on Thursday, May 10, 2018

Commenting on the competition, Sabancı University Startup Company League and  EIT InnoEnergy Turkey Director Başar Kaya said:

“The entrepreneurship ecosystem in Turkey is new but burgeoning. Energy startups draw the most attention to themselves due to both regional priorities and global developments. High regulation in the energy business and market dynamics controlled mostly by large players may prevent startups from entering the market. The support of an institution like InnoEnergy, with its expertise in the global energy markets and strong business partners, has the potential to carry a startup beyond its local market to the global scene. Thus, PowerUp was critical to energy entrepreneurs in Turkey for establishing contact with EIT InnoEnergy and becoming part of the global business network. The fact that Turkey accounts for the most submissions among the 24 countries shows how motivated energy startups in Turkey are to expand to global markets."

PowerUp Turkey was held in association with the Sabancı University Startup Company League (SUCool) and received submissions from 37 startups. The 10 chosen startups attended the Bootcamp on May 5 and 6, 2018 to work on their business models with expert trainers, mentors and energy sector professionals, and rehearsed their presentations for the finals. The 10 startups presented their business ideas to a large audience consisting of energy sector representatives and investors at the finals on May 10.

Startups were assessed by the jury panel based on the originality of their products and services, the benefit to the energy industry, and potential for growth in global markets. PowerUp Turkey jury members were Sabancı University Presidential Advisor Dr. Volkan ÖZGÜZ, Sabancı University IICEC Director Dr. Carmine DIFIGLIO, EnerjiSA-EON CTO Gül EROL, VESTEL Ventures Board Member Cengiz Ultav, and InnoEnergy Cooperation and External Fund Operations Associate Michal Bajda.

PowerUp! Competition Gold Sponsor RAFAKO’s CEO Agnieszka Wasilewska-Semail said the following about the significance of the competition:

“At RAFAKO, our business is not limited to equipment design and production; the environment plays a large part as well.  That is why we support InnoEnergy’s mission to make a great impact through innovation in sustainable clean energy. Our goal is to make energy production as environmentally-friendly as possible. The PowerUp! Competition is a perfect match with RAFAKO’s objectives. We hope that the startups discovered in this competition will contribute to a cleaner environment.”

The country finalists will compete against each other at the Žofín Palace in Prague on June 19 for the grand prize of 30,000 Euros and participation in InnoEnergy’s prestigious Highway® Accelerator Program to prepare for a stronger entry into the market.

SHURA sets out to transform energy in Turkey

The SHURA Energy Transformation Center was inaugurated on May 9, 2018 at a launch event attended by representatives from industry, public sector, civil society and universities to contribute to the debate on energy transformation in Turkey. SHURA also shared the striking results of its inaugural study on the Turkish electricity sector. According to this first nationwide study, Turkey can increase its installed wind and solar energy capacity to 40 gigawatts by 2026 without undertaking any additional transmission costs.

The SHURA Energy Transformation Center, founded with the partnership of the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Germany's most influential energy think-tank Agora Energiewende, and Sabancı University Istanbul Policy Center (IPC), started its activities to facilitate Turkey's transformation to a low-carbon energy system. SHURA is focused on producing research and analyses that assess the economic, technological and political aspects of Turkey's energy sector in order to create a common platform with energy efficiency and renewable sources at its center.

Speaking at the event, SHURA Energy Transformation Center Steering Committee Chair Selahattin Hakman pointed out the objectives, mission and approach of SHURA, saying “SHURA believes in the importance of a process that will consider the perspectives of all stakeholders in the energy sector to ensure a quick transformation which will also reinforce the economy and benefit all parties involved” dedi.

40 GW of installed wind and solar energy capacity possible by 2026

SHURA shared the results of its inaugural study on the Turkish electricity generation capacity and transmission infrastructure. Focusing on the possible means of integrating renewable resources to the electricity transmission network, the study fills a significant knowledge gap.

Emphasizing that this was the first nationwide study in Turkey, Değer Saygın continued: “The results of the study on the increasing share of renewable sources in the electricity transmission network are exciting. Turkey has the potential to double the forecasted increase in solar and wind power without introducing any additional costs to the transmission network investment planned by TEİAŞ until 2026. This will ensure that the electricity produced from these sources accounts for more than  20% of total consumptionIn other words, increasing Turkey's installed capacity for wind and solar power to 40 GW by 2026 will have little impact on the electricity network. This is groundbreaking for system operators, energy planners and investors. This report on the development of renewable energy may pave the way for a large-scale transformation of the Turkish energy system.”

SHURA Brings the Energy Sector Together

Saying that SHURA aimed to contribute to building a low-carbon future through knowledge and current data,  Selahattin Hakman continued: “SHURA  also finds it important that different perspectives are integrated into energy transformation. This is why SHURA has an advisory board that consists of leaders from investment, technology, finance, academia, consultancy, think-tanks, and nongovernmental organizations. Our name is inspired by the mythological Middle Eastern deities of wind (Shu) and sun (Ra), and is a homonym of the Arabic word for 'council'.  As such, we are perfectly situated to become a multi-stakeholder negotiation platform that will reflect Turkey's transformative power in renewable energies.

Delivering introductory remarks, Sabancı University President Professor Zehra Sayers said, “Sabancı University, in association with national and international partners, has been undertaking successful initiatives and doing work on climate change and energy issues through the years. It now hosts the SHURA initiative to follow through on its vision of bringing together decision-makers, the private sector, and civil society organizations around original research focusing on analysis.

Dr. Patrick Graichen, Executive Director of Agora Energiewende, the most influential energy think-tank in Germany, commented: “In Germany, we are aware of the importance of leading a global energy transformation, and have witnessed the benefits of renewable energies and efficiency technologies as costs go down quickly. I hope that the creative business minds in Turkey will join the governments and sectors that have realized the opportunities offered by energy transformation. Agora Energiewende has been established to discuss transformation based on multi-stakeholder technical research, making its collaboration with SHURA especially valuable. I believe SHURA will be a great business partner for Turkey's energy future.”

Discussing energy transformation in Turkey, SHURA founding partner European Climate Foundation's General Director Prof. Laurence Tubiana said, “Country-level energy transformation is prerequisite to implementing the Paris Convention. With an analytical foundation, a team knowledgeable in energy systems, and a transparent and data-centric attitude, I believe that SHURA will inspire Turkey's policies for transitioning to a safe, efficient and low-carbon energy system.

SHURA Energy Transformation Center Director Dr. Değer Saygın discussed the economic opportunities that energy transformation would create, saying: “Turkey has been undergoing extensive change with a rapidly-growing economy, increasing energy demand, and progressively more competitive energy market, and has become one of Europe's most prolific wind and solar markets. An industry that provides solutions to energy transformation, investors who are open to flexible and new business models, and creative entrepreneurs are an asset for Turkey to play a leading role on a global scale."
