Cooperation on Composite Engine Parts Development Between TEI and Sabancı University

Sabancı University signed an agreement with TEI to develop composite engine parts.

Within the scope of the agreement signed by TEI General Manager Prof. Dr. Mahmut F. Akşit and Sabancı University President Prof. Dr. Yusuf Leblebici, the "Fan Inner Casing System Development Project from Composite Material in Turbofan Engines" will be carried out at the Sabancı University Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Center (SU IMC).

While the use of composite material technology in aviation engines provides a competitive solution by enabling lightweight engine design, it also provides a major advantage by providing greater strength. The use of composite materials in aviation engines is becoming widespread thanks to developing manufacturing technologies.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, TEI General Manager Prof. Dr. Mahmut F. Akşit noted that they have been carrying out a range of different projects with Sabancı University for many years, especially in the field of additive manufacturing, and that the works to be carried out in the context of this agreement will take the cooperation between the two institutions to the next level. Akşit said that the parts produced in the aviation industry are especially difficult and complex, and that they have achieved important outputs as a result of the hard work of all the teams involved in the projects they carried out with Sabancı University. Akşit continued: “The project for the development of this system, which will be used in Turkey's most powerful engine, will be an important step on this path, on which we will move towards more challenging projects”.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sabancı University President Prof. Dr. Yusuf Leblebici said, “Sabancı University has been carrying out very important and successful projects on composite materials and additive manufacturing for years. We have been working with TEI for a long time, especially on additive manufacturing, and we have achieved very good results so far. Today, in addition to all these efforts, we are undertaking a project that will open the door to the use of composite materials in the aviation industry. With this agreement, as Sabancı University, we will continue to support TEI's work with our researchers and staff members at our center. We are also proud that we have made Turkey one of the few countries in the world that has a say in this field”.

A Project from Sabancı University that Will Bring Hope to Wilson’s Disease Patients

A Project from Sabancı University that Will Bring Hope to Wilson’s Disease Patients

The project of Sabancı University, awarded within the scope of the B Group R&D Project Call of the Presidency of Turkish Health Institutes, will be a hope for Wilson‘s disease patients. When the project is completed successfully, a permanent gene therapy prototype will be created for Wilson’s disease patients. Thus, patients will not have to take drugs for their entire lives and will not need liver transplants.

Sabancı University's new project will start a new era in the treatment of Wilson's patients, with a prevalance rate of 1 in every 30 thousand people in the world. With the new project developed, it is aimed to treat hereditary Wilson's Disease (WD), which causes copper accumulation in many organs, through a gene therapy in which the full-length ATP7B gene is delivered to liver cells by a virus under its own control, using hybrid gene technology.

The project entitled "Improving copper metabolism with a hybrid gene therapy approach and developing a new treatment method for Wilson's Disease", led by Dr. Cavit Ağca, member of Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, was also entitled to support within the scope of the Presidency of Turkish Health Institutes (TÜSEB) Group B R&D Project Call.

Sabancı University Faculty Member Cavit Ağca, the project coordinator, stated that they aim to increase the quality of life of patients by contributing to the treatment of WD and other rare diseases with the hybrid gene therapy approach they offer within the scope of the project. He continued as follows:

“This new gene therapy we have designed will be a beacon of hope for Wilson's patients. When the project is successfully implemented, only a single dose injection for life will be sufficient for treatment. The strategy we will put forward for WD will be a pioneer not only for WD, but also for all other gene studies. In addition, we believe that our project will lead to the presentation of other gene therapy projects in the future and will affect the visibility and prevalence of studies in this field in our country.”

Carried out under the leadership of Sabancı University within the scope of TÜSEB Group B R&D Project Call, which aims to support strategically important R&D projects in the field of health technologies that produce original scientific knowledge in the field of health, solve problems,  and develop products with high added value and commercialization potential, the project is  expected to last for 24 months. The project is carried out in partnership with Ceyda Açalan Ayhan and Müjdat Zeybel, both from Koç University.

Jinan Uluslararası Fotoğraf Bienali

Although we are thousands of miles apart and far away, we are each an individual of vague yet firm shining point in the bright light of human civilization. We face each other across the sea and seem to be standing alone. However, the breath of the ocean has already made us form a unified community of destiny, which is difficult to separate and give up. Even if there is nowhere to go, they are still watching and knowing each other and sharing safety and security. Today, in the face of the complicated and changing global situation, such as the fragile recovery of the world economy, our mutual openness, diversity and inclusiveness are the foundation and lifeblood of the prosperity and development of the Asia Pacific region.

The rapid development of the Internet and digital technology in this century has brought photography into the pan-digital era. At a time when the contemporary digital cultural context presents a kind of media and consumption, and when the traditional photography methods and concepts are gradually being diluted, we need to think about the future development direction of photography. At the same time, under the waves of information in the 21st century, profound changes have taken place in people's way of life, means of production and cognitive thinking. As a product of information technology in the new era, the Internet has opened the way and brought notable changes to human information dissemination. After the evolution and development of mobile phones and social media, photography education is also facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In order to adapt to the rapid changes and development, it is necessary to break down barriers between each other, break through obstacles, and establish a good communication and exchange mechanism to promote the joint development of photography education in various countries.

This exhibition is the 3rd international university photography invitational exhibition since the 2018 "From Chang'an to Rome" China-Italian University Photography Invitational Exhibition and the 2020 "Foreign Land, Same Sky" China, Japan and South Korea University Photography Invitational Exhibition. This time, thirty-seven universities participated in the exhibition. The Asia-Pacific region universities hold offline and online photography exhibitions jointly. Hundreds of excellent photography and video works express how university teachers and students in the Asia-Pacific region observe the world and the means of artistic practice and expression of visual language. In the boundless mutual exchange and learning, we aim to promote the contemporary development of photography education worldwide. At the same time, when we gather together, a small amount of light can turn into a radiant glow no matter how far apart we are.

Sabancı University Hosts TÜBİTAK President

Sabancı University Hosts TÜBİTAK President

TÜBİTAK President Hasan Mandal visited Sabancı University and made a presentation entitled “TÜBİTAK Strategies” to faculty members.

At the meeting held on Friday, October 14, 2022, Hasan Mandal said, “Pandemics will be one of the important agenda items in the next 10 years. In addition, issues such as green transformation, climate change, loss of biodiversity, extreme climatic events, food supply security, cyber security, and problematic immigration are among the issues that stand out for the future. At TÜBİTAK, we also prioritize these issues in our efforts”.

Mandal continued as follows: “Traditional solutions are not enough to overcome the difficulties experienced. We are entering a period when social and human sciences will be much stronger. The sociotechnical dimension is becoming more and more important in the technologies developed. Industry 4.0 alone is not enough after the pandemic. Therefore, the green-digital binary transformation is the main agenda of research policymakers. In this context, the European Commission talks about the concept of Industry 5.0 and adopts the ESG (environment, social, government) approach in its programs. We also attach importance to the main components of sustainability, flexibility against risks, and strong people orientation in TÜBİTAK programs”.

Mandal also shared information about current TÜBİTAK programs. In his presentation, Mandal emphasized that Sabancı University has very high potential in many fields and that it is the only university that stands out in some projects such as SAYEM.

Stating that they have made many innovations in supporting scientific and technological research projects recently, and that there are many steps ranging from facilitating application processes to increasing support budgets, Hasan Mandal answered questions from Sabancı University faculty members following his presentation.

OTTOLEGAL Conference Held at Sabancı University’s Digital Campus

OTTOLEGAL Conference Held at Sabancı University’s Digital Campus

Sabancı University welcomed dozens of acclaimed scholars from across the world at its Altunizade Digital Campus to discuss one of the most pressing issues facing historians and other scholars in the humanities and social sciences today: How to reconceptualize our understanding of the past to acknowledge the vital role played by groups often marginalized in traditional scholarship and contemporary discourse, including religious and ethnic minorities, women, and others.

ottolegal konferansı

The conference, organized by Abdurrahman Atçıl and Ayşe Ozil Sabancı University Faculty Members of FASS alongside Eugenia Kermeli from Hacettepe University, was held under the umbrella of the ongoing project “OTTOLEGAL: The Making of Ottoman Law,” a project based at Sabancı University and generously supported by the European Research Council.

Entitled “The Balance of Justice in the Ottoman Empire: Non-Muslims as Agents in an Islamic Imperial Legal Context,” the conference featured twenty presentations by scholars from North America, Europe, and the Middle East, with attendees participating from even further afield.

ottolegal konferansı_2

The conference began on 13 October with opening remarks by the organizers, Yusuf Leblebici, President of Sabancı University and Meltem Müftüler-Baç, Dean of FASS. The topics of the conference ranged from conceptual studies dealing with notions of justice and the dynamics of Ottoman legal thought and practice to cases studies related to the Ottoman non-Muslim actors and to wide-ranging analyses of the purview of Islamic and communal courts. The conference closed with a lively roundtable kicked off by Engin Deniz Akarlı, Baki Tezcan, and Edhem Eldem, after which attendees were treated to a special tour and dinner at Topkapı Palace.

The OTTOLEGAL team thanks everyone who attended and all those whose work went into making the conference a success. The team will now begin work on an edited volume that will build on the ideas and insights articulated at the conference and bring them to an even wider audience.

Professional Graduate Programs 2022 Commencement Ceremony Held

Professional Graduate Programs 2022 Commencement Ceremony Held

The Professional Graduate Programs 2022 Commencement Ceremony was held on our Tuzla Campus. Sabancı University President Prof. Dr. Yusuf Leblebici, Yemeksepeti CEO Mert Baki, as well as faculty members and relatives of students, attended the ceremony in which 206 students graduating from the Graduate School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and Sabancı Graduate Business School were present.

“EDU HAD GREAT SUCCESS, TAKING THE 42TH PLACE IN THE FINANCIAL TIMES WORLD RANKINGS”

Sabancı University President Yusuf Leblebici addressed the graduates in his speech at the ceremony and said, “Today, we are graduating 206 students from 8 different professional graduate programs. As Sabancı University, we believe that higher education plays an important role not only in the development of an individual, but also in the development of society, economy, the business world and the environment. This vision lies behind the increase in our research projects and investments in this field every year. As Sabancı University, we are among the universities in Turkey that allocate the greatest budgets to research and development. Today, we are one of the three foundation universities that officially received the title of Research University”.

Stating that they attach great importance to university-industry collaborations, Yusuf Leblebici continued as follows: “As part of the contribution we provide to the society and the business world, we attach great importance to the professional graduate programs that you graduate from today. Our experience-oriented, innovative programs, featuring the most up-to-date information, prepare you for the business world of the future. Each of these programs has a very special place in their field. The professional graduate programs we offer not only in the field of management, but also in various fields ranging from cyber security to energy technologies, from data analytics to finance, provide an important development opportunity for all professionals. At the same time, these programs fulfill an important task in terms of responding to the competency needs of the business world”.

Yusuf Leblebici stated that as Sabancı University, they are among the top universities from Turkey participating in the world university rankings, and concluded as follows: “Sabancı University Executive Development Unit, EDU, has achieved great success with its special training for executives and ranked 42nd in the 2022 world rankings in terms of custom programs as organized by the Financial Times. In addition, we have recently ranked among the top 500 universities in the world in Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 World University Rankings. Undoubtedly, the biggest source of our success is you, our esteemed students. We are preferred by the best students of Turkey in undergraduate education as in graduate programs. According to the results of this year's Higher Education Institutions Exam, the number of students we received from the Top 1000 was 140. We have become the university with the highest score in Turkey in terms of admission to faculties”.

The guest speaker of the ceremony, Yemeksepeti CEO Mert Baki, drew attention to the achievements of Sabancı University and said:

“Since its establishment, Sabancı University has been a pioneer, innovative and different in many aspects for our country and our people. It has managed to become an exemplary university not only in Turkey but also in the world, with its freedom to choose a program, its strong sensitivity to the wishes of all stakeholders and students and the society it is in, and of course its philosophy of "creating and developing together". I am confident that our university, which has the experience and potential to raise successful generations of the future, will add new achievements to the existing ones in the coming years”.

“BE THE HERO OF YOUR OWN STORY, DRAW YOUR OWN PATH”.

Giving advice to the graduates by saying, "You are now stepping into a new chapter of your life," Baki continued: “You should never stop wondering and asking questions. Life gives us many options in our professional or private lives. But in any case, you may have to make a choice and move on. Life is full of elective courses that sometimes give you the options you don't like, and sometimes exams that ask you questions from the chapters you haven't studied. Don't try to be the best at everything. Do what you do best, and for everything else, surround yourself with people who are better than you, who can help you. Always be in touch with technology. You will see the benefits of using technology well at every stage of life.

“There is no one right way in life. Please don't be obsessed with making the right decision. Everyone's path is different; don't compare yourself to others. Being at peace with yourself, developing self-esteem and self-confidence, I think, are the keys to a successful and good life. Try to be inspired by failure stories as well as success stories. Finally, be the hero of your own story, draw your own path. Have a roadmap, but be ready to deviate from it at any moment, and remember that every deviation is a stop on this journey where we collect precious memories and makes us who we are”.

The Sabancı University Professional Graduate Programs 2022 Commencement Ceremony ended after graduates were awarded their diplomas.
