Visual artist and Sabancı University faculty member Selim Birsel will host an “Open Table” meeting at DEPO/ Tobacco Warehouse where he will discuss his past and present creations at a two-hour exhibition/performance with his guests Ali Akay, Can Altay and Adnan Yıldız.
The “Open Table” is a sharing platform initiated by artist Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz in 2000: “The Open Table manifests itself with an open approach. It suggests sharing, paving the way for ever-deferred thoughts and enthusiasm of coming together, and, most importantly, stepping down from ivory towers and talking candidly, with no setbacks and hesitations.”
Selim Birsel introduces the discussions between him and his guests and the two-hour exhibition/performance with the following words:
“… When I woke up one morning, there was no water in the bathroom. I walked on the dark red, dusty carpet and went to the lounge. I walked past the remains of last night’s party – empty bottles, overflowing ashtrays, chicken bones, juice spills, dried coffee cups – and opened the window. I leaned outside, smelled the air and…”
Selim Birsel was born in Belgium in 1963, and currently works and lives in Istanbul. Birsel does research and studies in various branches of art, including illustration, painting, installation, photography, video, audio and performance, and has been exhibiting his work on national and international platforms since 1990. He has acted as curator to various projects and organizations since 1992. He has been a member of Sabancı University faculty since 1999, and facilitates art workshops
