Winners of Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards will be announced today

Winners of the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards, the first international award program in Turkey in the field of social sciences, organized by Sabancı University, will be announced on Monday, April 11, 2022. The awards are organized for the 17th time this year, following the will of Sabancı University Honorary President Sakıp Sabancı.


The theme for the 2022 edition of the annual Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards, the first international award program in Turkey in the field of social sciences, is “The Future of Globalization: Return of the State?”.

Organized for the 17th time this year by Sabancı University following the will of Sabancı University Honorary President Sakıp Sabancı, the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards will be announced at an online ceremony to be held on April 11. Researchers under 45 years of age and a scientist who has made distinguished contributions to this year’s theme in the field of social sciences will receive awards.

Applications are evaluated by an independent jury

The award program is carried out by Sabancı University, under the leadership of Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Istanbul Policy Center, and articles submitted are evaluated by an independent and international jury. In the context of the award program, a different theme is determined every year from across all the disciplines of social sciences ranging from economics to politics, history, and psychology. This year, the international award program has received applications from 12 countries ranging from the US, to India, Jamaica, and Macedonia.

Announced every year with a special commemoration and award ceremony, the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards will be announced at a special event that will this year be held online through Sabancı University communication channels due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sakıp Sabancı International Research Awards ceremony will start at 20:30 on Monday, April 11, 2022 and the event can be viewed in Turkish and English via the following links.

Carbon Border Adjustment in 2030 for Turkish Exporters

It can be seen that the effects of the climate change and the new trends in the global trade system have started to shape the developments in the world economy. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which is one of the proposed regulations of the European Union in this context, is expected to have an impact on the world trade including Turkey’s trade with the EU.

SUNUM_Nano Open Webinar

The mechanism will, at first stage, cover iron and steel, cement, fertilizer, aluminum and electricity sectors in Turkey. In the Nano Open Webinar, Attorney Şafak Herdem will provide information about how the mechanism will impact Turkeyincluding the recent sanctions as one of the major suppliers of the EU.

Applications Opening for 2022 Hakan Orbay Research Award

Applications for the 2022 Hakan Orbay Research Award, which has been presented since 2013 by Sabancı Business School to keep the memory of Hakan Orbay alive, will be open on Monday, March 28.

The aim of this annual award is to encourage young researchers to undertake original research in finance and microeconomics.

Awards in 2 different categories as “Young Researcher” and “PhD Student” will be presented this year.

About Hakan Orbay

After graduating from Ankara Science High School in 1979, Hakan Orbay received his undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Bogazici University in 1983. He obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Calgary University and subsequently returned to Turkey to work in the Information Technology area of the banking sector between1988-1991. He kept close links with academia during those years and eventually went to the U.S. for his doctoral studies in 1991. After obtaining a PhD in Economics from Stanford University, Graduate School of Business, he worked as a faculty member at Koc University until 1999. Next, he joined the Sabancı School of Management during its establishment years and worked there as a faculty member until his untimely death in 2011. Hakan Orbay produced original research in microeconomics and finance and made important contributions to the establishment and development of the Sabancı School of Management, Istanbul, Turkey.

Aselsan and Sabancı University sign a Pioneering Technologies Cooperation Protocol

The “Pioneering Technologies Summit” between ASELSAN and Sabancı University was held on March 14-17, 2022. The summit consisted of sessions on 12 different topics. The foundations of the summit were laid in the workshop held by Sabancı University in cooperation with ASELSAN’s Vice Presidency of R&D Department on December 22-24, 2021 in Istanbul.

The Pioneering Technologies Summit lasted 4 days with the participation of nearly 30 academics and 70 ASELSAN staff members, who exchanged ideas on possible cooperation projects under 12 different topics. On the last day of the summit, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to ensure the cooperation between two institutions with the participation of Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, Chairman of the Board and CEO of ASELSAN, and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Leblebici, President of Sabancı University.

The protocol signed with ASELSAN on critical innovative technologies will greatly contribute to the research environment of our university and in the long run will help the bottom line of our country’s research ecosystem.

It is planned to carry out research activities with a Technology Readiness Level of 1 to 4 in the potential project fields discussed in the summit and to ensure the sustainability of the projects in cooperation with the related ASELSAN divisions. It is planned to hold the summit on an annual basis with the participation of ASELSAN and Sabancı University.

The Final Report of the Project of ARAMA Chair Has Been Published

The final report of the ‘Searching for a New Formula for Collaboration between Turkey and the EU in North Africa’ project conducted by ARAMA Chair in Action Research Oğuz Babüroğlu and Action Research Program Manager Pınar Akpınar has been published.

The project was conducted in partnership with the Clingendael Institute (the Netherlands), with the grant received from Centre for Applied Turkey Studies’ (CATS) Network which is funded by Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP) and German Federal Foreign Office.

By using action research methodology, the project investigated the extent to which Turkey and the EU could collaborate in and with North Africa, more specifically, Morocco, Egypt and Algeria and developed a trilateral model for collaboration.

Temel Kotil, CEO of TAI, met Sabancı University students

Temel Kotil, CEO of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), came together with Sabancı University students. Delivering a presentation about TAI’s activities, Temel Kotil called Sabancı University students to work for the company.

The gathering took place on Friday, March 18 on Sabancı University’s Tuzla Campus and was attended by Yusuf Leblebici, President of Sabancı University, Cem Güneri, Vice-President of Education, Mehmet Yıldız, Vice-President for Research and Development, Erkay Savaş, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS), and FENS students.

Making the opening speech of the event, Yusuf Leblebici stated that the university had continued education during the pandemic. He added, “At Sabancı University, we managed to continue our education under challenging conditions. We never compromised our quality. We continue to raise the best engineers in Turkey. We now look to the future. We are trying to create opportunities to open our students’ path and ensure their professional development. We aim to achieve this in our event today. Our students can already open the door to the aerospace sector, which is one of the most exciting and the most technologically advanced sectors in Turkey”.

Presenting TAI’s activities and general structure to students, Temel Kotil pointed out that nearly 5 thousand engineers are employed by the company, and that they want to employ more engineers. Kotil said, “We aim to lay good foundations for the future. We want to double the number of our engineers in a short period of time. I am aware that Sabancı university has very good students and I am inviting them to join us as they reach their 3rd or 4th year of university studies. We offer students the opportunity to work while they continue their education, because we need good engineers. We want to benefit from having you in our team”.

CEF to organize 5 different certificate programs in the Spring semester

Sabancı University Center of Excellence in Finance – CEF, of which Akbank is the founding sponsor, will organize 5 different certificate programs in the Spring semester.

The “Mergers and Acquisitions” certificate program, which will start on March 15, 2022, aims to provide the necessary skills to all levels of financial managers to help them manage the acquisition process in an educated way. The instructor of the program is Şerif Aziz Şimşir, Faculty Member at Sabancı University.

The “Fundamentals of Finance” certificate program, which will take place on March 29-31, and April 5-7, treats finance under the heading of investments. The program training will be delivered by Özgür Demirtaş, Chair Professor of Finance at Sabancı University.

The “Valuation: Art, Science or Magic?” certificate program, which aims to provide the basics of valuation, will start on April 14 and last for 4 days. The program will be delivered by Aswath Damodaran, Faculty Member at New York University.

The “Portfolio Management and Asset Pricing” certificate program, which will be delivered by Doruk Günaydın, Faculty Member at Sabancı University, on April 18-20-25-27, will provide participants with a strong foundation in fixed-income securities in addition to portfolio theory.

In the last week of May, CEF will provide a 2-day certificate program on “Crypto Assets and Blockchain Technology”. The program will be delivered by Cristina Dolan, Founder/CEO of InsideChains.

The programs will be held online.
