Sabancı University has announced the first and only Master's program in Action Research and Transformation in Turkey. This non-thesis master's program targeting middle and senior managers aims to respond to the need of institutions and companies to be ready for the rapidly increasing transformation occurring with developments such as climate change, the pandemic, and new business models and working styles.

Sabancı University has announced the Master in Action Research and Transformation Program (mART), which it will launch in the 2022-2023 academic year, following the Action Research PhD Program it started in 2019.

Noting that developments such as climate change, food crises, the pandemic in the last two years, and new business models and ways of working have increased the need for companies and institutions for transformation management, ARAMA Chair and Professor of Action Research Oğuz Babüroğlu said, “Action research as an inclusive, interesting and non-hierarchical method aims to generate benefits for all stakeholders. With this master's program, we aim to teach mid-level and senior executive candidates the methodology of action research, and provide them with the competencies to successfully manage rapid change and transformation”.

Stating that they will host the leading people in action research in the world in the 12-month program and that they will proceed directly through the cases by addressing new applications, Babüroğlu said, “We will present action research in all its aspects to the program participants. There is no master's program in Turkey that includes transformation management and focuses on such a methodology. As far as we know, it is a first in the world, too.”

The program will host an international symposium

Within the scope of the program, participants will have courses on subjects such as Workforce Transformation and Change Management, Decision Making Practice, Action Research Implementation and Facilitation, Institutional Transformation, and Strategy.

David Coghlan, who is among the first people that come to mind in action research, and the author of the book "Doing Action Research inYour Own Organization", is among the scholars who will teach in the program.

Oğuz Babüroğlu announced that they will also host the international symposium organized every two years by the International Journal of Action Research on October 12-14, 2022 within the scope of the program. On the first day of the conference, a session will be held together with the Union of Municipalities of Turkey on how to realize the Green Deal.

Sabancı University Center of Excellence in Finance (CEF), founded under the sponsorship of Akbank, will host Pedro Matos, faculty member at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business at a seminar entitled “ESG Investments”.

The main speaker of the seminar, which will be broadcast live on CEF Youtube channel  on Monday, June 27, 2022, Professor Pedro Matos will present his research focusing on the responsible investment practices of institutional investors around the world, and will share his findings in addition to a recent study examining how institutional investors are “decarbonizing” their portfolios in response to the climate crisis.

The seminar will be moderated by Dr. Doruk Günaydın, member of Sabancı Business School.

The language of the seminar, which will take place between 19.00 and 20.00 Turkish time, will be English.

Pedro Matos is the academic director of the Richard A. Mayo Center for Asset Management, holds the John G. Macfarlane Family Chair in Business Administration and is a professor of business administration (Finance) at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. His research focuses on the growing importance of institutional investors in financial markets worldwide. Matos is a research associate at the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), and a member of PRI (Principles for Responsible Investment), a UN-supported international network of investors. Matos holds a B.A. in economics from Nova University in Lisbon (Portugal) and a Ph.D. in finance from INSEAD in Fontainebleau (France).  He previously taught at the University of Southern California.

About Prof. Dr. Ahu Altınkut Uncuoğlu

Prof. Ahu Altınkut Uncuoğlu has been working in Bioengineering Department at Marmara University, and carrying out project based studies with Plant Biotechnology Research Group established by her since 2011. Previously, she worked in The Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK), Marmara Research Center (MRC), Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute about 15 years. She worked in Colorado State University (USA) and Haifa University (Israel) by conducting pre-doctoral and post-doctoral studies respectively on structural and functional genomic studies in cereals with the support of “MRC-World Bank Fellowship”, "UNESCO – L’Oréal Young Woman Researcher" and “International Plant Genetic Resources Institute Vavilov-Frankel scholarship”. In 2009, the "American Association for the Advancement of Science" introduced Prof. Uncuoğlu, as one of the successful scientific UNSECOL’Oréal Fellow. Her research group focuses particularly on (i) biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, (ii) molecular plant breeding (MAS) studies, (iii) plant tissue culture and haploid plant production, (iv) phylogenetic analysis, association mapping and DNA barcoding studies in plants, understanding plant biodiversity at molecular level, (v) use of nanomaterials as potential fertilizers in environmental fields by plant in vitro culture techniques. Furthermore, she has interest on technology transfer and university-industry relations by performing multi-disciplinary and target oriented research in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. She took an active role in the establishment of Marmara University Innovation and Technology Transfer Office (MITTO) and served as MITTO Director in the 2016-2021 period. Currently, Prof. Uncuoğlu is an executive board member of the University Industry Cooperation Centers Platform (USIMP) and she has Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), Professional Scrum Master (PSMI) certificates.

Students who students enrolled at universities other than Sabancı University can apply to the courses offered by Sabancı University to participate as special students.

Organized for the first time at Sabancı University, the Entrepreneurship Forum was held at Altunizade Digital Campus on May 11 with the participation of Güler Sabancı, the Founding Chair of Sabancı University Board of Trustees and Board of Trustees members.

Hosted by Sabancı University CIO Mustafa Ergen and SU Outreach Office, the event was attended by Sabancı University President Yusuf Leblebici, Vice Presidents Mehmet Yıldız and Fuat Keyman, Secretary General Ali Çalışkan, FENS Dean Erkay Savaş, FASS Dean Meltem Müftüler-Baç, SBS Dean Nihat Kasap, SU IMC CEO Devrim Özaydın, SU IMC Director Burcu Saner Okan, SUNUM Director Fazilet Vardar and SUATT Director Talat Durgut.

Young faculty members made presentations at the event, which was held to reveal the commercialization and entrepreneurship potential of research at Sabancı University in the short, medium, and long term. Projects and ideas were presented to the Board of Trustees at the event, which took place in the format of an "Elevator Pitch" and was attended by 16 researchers from Sabancı University.

In the event, technology-based, technologically innovative, and groundbreaking ideas proposed by Sabancı University Researchers were introduced to the Members of the Board of Trustees under the following headings: The problem and need for which solutions were provided, the innovative dimension of the solutions, the activities carried out so far, target audience, market size, competition, and income model.

The topics covered in the presentations will be evaluated in the fields of networking, potential start-ups, investment, and patenting. In this context, the aim is to increase the commercialization potential of technology and ideas generated at the university.

The 10th Anniversary of the Istanbul Policy Center-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative was celebrated with a panel. Relations between Turkey and Germany were evaluated in the panel entitled “Turkey-EU/Germany Relations: Then, Now and Future”. At the event, it was expressed that Turkey would be together with the EU in the long term.

The 10th Anniversary of the Istanbul Policy Center-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative, which aims to develop academic, political and social ties between Turkey and Germany, was celebrated with an event held at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. Through the Mercator–IPC Research Fellowship Program realized as part of this initiative, researchers carry out academic studies in a wide range of subjects from climate change to social cohesion of refugees, from cultural policies to gender.

As part of the celebration program, a panel entitled “Turkey-EU/Germany Relations: Then, Now and Future”, moderated by Sabancı University IPC Director Fuat Keyman, was held. The panel was attended by Ruprecht Polenz, Member of the Mercator-IPC Advisory Council; Andreas Nick, former member of the Council of Europe and 2022 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow; Senem Aydın-Düzgit, IPC Research and Academic Affairs Coordinator. Director of the Center for International Relations of Stiftung Mercator Anne Duncker; Sabancı University President Yusuf Leblebici; and 2018/19 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow Özcan Mutlu also attended the 10th Anniversary celebration event.

In his speech at the panel, Fuat Keyman reminded participants that 9 May is both Europe Day and Russia Victory Day and emphasized that Russia's attempt to invade Ukraine has led to important political changes and a paradigm shift regarding international relations and Europe. Pointing out that the war created a kind of momentum for the revival of the relations and partnerships between the transatlantic alliance and the two sides of the Atlantic, Keyman also drew attention to the challenges brought by this situation. Among these challenges, Keyman listed growing concerns over isolationism in the United States and the capacity and willingness of Europe and NATO to maintain existing solidarity should the war continue. In his evaluation, Keyman pointed to a revival process in which the idea of ​​Europe continues, and he stated that the war could trigger a move to a systemic transition process and uncertainty that can be described as the end of the liberal order.

The first speaker of the panel, Mercator-IPC Advisory Council Member Ruprecht Polenz, said that the first thing he would want to do when looking back on Turkey and EU relations would be to press the reset button. Recalling the existence of a very hopeful atmosphere when the Turkey-EU negotiations started in 2005, Polenz evaluated Turkey's not being accepted for membership in advance and the discussion of a privileged partnership status as mistakes made during the negotiations. Stating that international relations are now largely shaped through civil society connections, Polenz said that what needs to be done in this direction is more inclusive and broad-based diplomacy and that civil society relations should be included more in international processes. Stating that this integration will make a considerable contribution to Turkey-EU relations, Polenz stated that he believes Turkey will be with the EU in the long run no matter what.

Andreas Nick, former member of the Council of Europe and 2022 Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow, pointed out that the Council of Europe is an excellent example of the institutional infrastructure built in Europe and that Turkey is one of the de facto founding members of the Council. Stating that it is necessary to focus more on existing ties and strengthen institutional ties in NATO and the Council of Europe in order to maintain healthy relations between Turkey and the EU, Nick emphasized the importance of building European integration organically at this level. Nick stated that these efforts need to be built on the foundation of the rule of law, democracy and the protection of human rights. He concluded by saying that if Europe is willing to accept that Turkey is and will remain an important regional power, the way out can be to create strategies that will be profitable and alliance-friendly for both sides, taking into account Turkey's interests and actions.

IPC Research and Academic Affairs Coordinator Senem Aydın-Düzgit started her speech by highlighting the change in Turkey-EU relations over the last ten years and said, “Although the negotiations continued in 2011, despite the slow progress, during this ten-year period, Turkey was first seen as a strategic partner rather than a candidate country, and then it began to be seen as a potential adversary. In the picture that emerged at the end of ten years, on the one hand, democratic and economic decline and violations of freedom were observed, on the other hand, economic partnerships and cooperation on the issue of migration continued. Aydın-Düzgit stated that a potential turning point is approaching for the future of westernization, which is one of the cornerstones of the republic, as the 100th anniversary of the Republic nears. Aydın-Düzgit said that at this point, issues such as the choices about how Turkey will organize state-society relations, the priority of fundamental freedoms, democracy, human rights, secularism, and women's rights will gain great importance. Aydın-Düzgit, who stated that she believes that there should be hope despite all these, listed the Turkish public, especially the younger generations seeing their future in Europe and considering Europe as a potential partner in the issue of climate change, among the sources of light necessary for this hope to flourish.

After the panel was concluded, Director of the Center for International Relations of Stiftung Mercator Anne Duncker presented her gifts to the audience after her speech emphasizing the importance of international understanding and partnership.

Sharing his views on the 10th Anniversary, Sabancı University President Yusuf Leblebici said, “Under the talented and visionary leadership of our esteemed faculty member Fuat Keyman, IPC has become a gold standard in policy research and social issues, and is now considered a reference source in many fields. The valuable contribution and support of Stiftung Mercator has clearly been instrumental in this success. At Sabancı University, we place great value on interdisciplinary research and have seen IPC as one of our shining stars for years. Our university has a very meaningful motto of creating and developing together. This is exactly what we are doing at IPC with the support of Stiftung Mercator and we aim to do many more productive pieces of work together.” The event ended after Özcan Mutlu's speech.

The 5th National Awareness Conference, organized by Sabancı University Civic Involvement Projects (CIP), took place on June 10, 2022 this year. At the conference, organized on the theme of social responsibility and voluntary work at universities, the participants agreed that social benefit is becoming a vital benefit today.

Sabancı University Civic Involvement Projects organized the fifth National Awareness Conference, which aims to create a environment of dialogue for the exchange of developments and different working approaches in the field of social responsibility in academia, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations. The conference took place on Friday, June 10 at Sabancı University's Altunizade Digital Campus.

At the 5th National Awareness Conference, representatives from Turkey's prominent universities, private sector, and non-governmental organizations that carry out social responsibility activities came together and exchanged their best practices, experiences, and knowledge with universities that want to work in the field of social responsibility and volunteering.

Delivering the opening speech of the conference, Sabancı University Vice President Fuat Keyman said, “Sabancı University celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. One of the main features that has distinguished Sabancı University from others in these 20 years has been civic involvement courses and projects. We attach great importance to raising our students as good citizens and individuals. While doing this, practical courses and working with NGOs have always been at the forefront. Civic involvement courses and projects will be one of the main dimensions that form the identity of Sabancı University in the next 5 years.”

Stating that civic involvement courses started to be followed by other universities with the decision of YÖK and that it is a course of action supported by NGOs, Fuat Keyman continued, “In civic involvement, it is very important to emphasize social benefit while developing individual human capital. It is necessary to work not only for Turkey, but also for the well-being of our region and the world. There are living things besides humans, there is nature, there is our planet. The approach to a human-oriented social vision is changing towards a life-oriented one. The social benefit has to be transformed into a vital benefit. It is important to consider and advance university education together with NGOs. The strengthening of civil society and the development of general confidence are very important. It is important to establish and maintain the connection between every student who comes to the university and civil society. In this way, you also become an active citizen. You create a network between being an individual and being an active citizen. Finally, it brings about being more virtuous and more moral, which is accompanied by respect for people, living things, and nature.”

VOLUNTEERING IS AN IMPORTANT DOOR OPENED FOR YOUTH

Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty Member Can Ercebe expressed the following views in his speech at the opening session:

“I run a voluntary course, but I have been a youth worker for many years. We can define youth work as the problematization of the subjectivization process of young people and the possession of instruments by which young people can build their own futures. Youth work was seen as developing the competencies of young people, but for the last 5 years, we have been trying to look at it from a rights-based perspective. We mean that the main subject is the youth. The participation of social capital in personal capital brings active citizenship. The state of participating in a mechanism as a subject, knowing and demanding their rights, is considered active citizenship. Volunteering is a very important door that opens in front of young people so that they can build their own lives.”

Speaking at the "Civic Involvement as a Course" session held as part of the conference, Sabancı University Civic Involvement Projects (CIP) Manager Zeynep Bahar Çelik said that the students who take this course, which is about awareness, want to be aware of how they can be individuals. Zeynep Bahar Celik said, “The Civic Involvement Projects course is one of many important innovations Sabancı University has brought to higher education. In addition to the scientific education it has given since the day it was founded, our university aimed for all its alumni to become active citizens who believe in the importance of participatory democracy. For this reason, for the first time in Turkey, a civic involvement course was applied as a compulsory course at our university, and it has been in place for more than 20 years. Approximately 1500 students take the Civic Involvement Projects course per year. While these students gain knowledge on many different subjects from conscious consumption to human rights, disability awareness, and health, they also enter the field and realize many projects. We offer students endless freedom to choose projects and develop ideas. This makes the course sustainable.”

Erkan Şamiloğlu, Deputy Director-General of Education, Research and Coordination of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who spoke at the panel entitled "Fieldwork Through the Eyes of Project Stakeholders", stated that one of the main policies determined by the Ministry of Youth and Sports for young people is volunteering, and summarized the process of adding volunteer work as an elective course at universities as follows: “We announced our volunteer work to the public in 2013. One of the areas where we would reach young people was volunteering, by removing the obstacles in front of the volunteers. We made new projects and research for this. We started to establish youth centers in 2015, and declared 2019 the "Year of Volunteering". Afterwards, the decision to open a voluntary course was announced to the universities. Since our youth centers are far from universities, we have established youth offices, which are liaison offices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports at universities. Currently, we have 400 youth centers in 100 universities. We have opened volunteer offices in all of them. Volunteering courses with 4 weeks of theoretical knowledge and 8 weeks of practice are held”.

THREE SEPARATE SESSIONS WERE HELD

At the conference, three separate sessions were held on “Civic Involvement as a Course”, “Fieldwork Through the Eyes of Project Stakeholders”, and “Capturing the Present and the Future: NFT and Blockchain in Civic Involvement”.

Moderated by Mevsimlik Co-Founder Mükerrem Aydoğan, the "Civic Involvement as a Course" session was attended by Istanbul University Volunteering Academy Co-Founder Assoc. Prof. Murat Şentürk, İzmir Institute of Technology Social Responsibility Projects Coordinator and Instructor Dr. Ozan Uştuk, Yaşar University Social Responsibility Projects Coordinator and Instructor Kevser Çimenli, and Sabancı University Civic Involvement Projects Manager Zeynep Bahar Çelik, as speakers.

The session on “Fieldwork Through the Eyes of Project Stakeholders” was moderated by Sabancı University CEF Coordinator Elif Kartal. In this session, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Education, Research and Coordination Deputy Director General Erkan Şamiloğlu; Local Animal Protection Volunteer, Kadıköy Animal Friends Platform Member and Istanbul Volunteer Pınar Satıoğlu; SosyalBen Foundation, Operations Team Senior Specialist; and National Volunteering Committee Secretary Tuğçe Yavuz were the speakers.

The last session of the conference was entitled "Capturing the Present and the Future: NFT and Blockchain in Civic Involvement". Creatiful Minds CTO Görkem Köse, Creatiful Minds CEO Atakan Demir and CIP Manager Zeynep Bahar Çelik attended this session as speakers.

Established by Sabancı University in 2019 to support sustainable development, Küçükköy Creative Technologies Atelier hosted the Ayvalık 2022 Cube Tournament, organized by the World Cube Association.

26 athletes from different cities in Turkey participated in the tournament organized by the Turkish Cube Federation with the support of Sabancı University and Carrefoursa.

In the cube competitions held in the 2X2X2, 3X3X3, 4X4X4 and Pyramid categories, Ömer Çetinkaya took first place in the 3X3X3 category, Timur Geyik in the 2X2X2 category, Mert Sağdıç in the 4x4x4 category, and Akın Köse in the Pyramid category.

The Turkish leg of the tournaments continued with Istanbul Spring 2022, held at Sabancı University Minerva Han on May 28-29.
