The first prize in the awards given by the Sabancı University Gender and Women’s Studies Forum in honor of the academic and activist Dicle Koğacıoğlu went to Özlem Ezer from the York University with her article “Freedom from the Hegemony of ‘The One’ and ‘The Language’: Plurality in Biographies.”
Held for the first time this year, the awards received applications of 28 graduate researchers from 16 universities in Turkey and abroad.
The first “Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards” were given by the Sabancı University Gender and Women’s Studies Forum at the Sabancı University Karaköy Communication Center on Saturday, October 23rd at a ceremony preceded by a student conference.
Planned to be given annually in honor of the academic and activist Dicle Koğacıoğlu, first prize in the awards went to Özlem Ezer from the York University with her article “Freedom from the Hegemony of ‘The One’ and ‘The Language’: Plurality in Biographies.” The first runner-up was Doğu Durgun from Sabancı University with his article “Gay Places: The Relation of the Gender Structure of Gay Men with Heteronormativity.” The second runner-up was Meral Akbaş from the Middle East Technical University with her article “To Laugh within Four Walls: On ‘Nightstick Dance,’ ‘Bruise Cream’ and ‘Bruises Fit for a Courtroom’.” Winners received their prizes from Sabancı University president Professor Nihat Berker.
The Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award transcends boundaries
Held for the first time this year, the awards received applications by 28 graduate researchers from 16 countries in Turkey and abroad, including Ankara University, Bilgi University, Bilkent University, Boğaziçi University; Dokuz Eylül University, European Inter-University Human Rights Institution, Galatasaray University, Hacettepe University, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University, Marmara University, Mimar Sinan University, Muğla University, METU, Radboud University, Sabancı University and the York University
Instated to support gender-related research on the society and culture of Turkey and to reward young researchers, the prize given to Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards winners for 2010 was TL 1000 , TL 750 and TL 500 for the first, second and third places, respectively.
Works assessed by an inter-university panel
The awards were open to all social sciences and humanities graduate students, and works were assessed anonymously by a panel comprised by members of various universities. Panel members were Professor Ayşe Öncü and Assistant Professor Selçuk Akşin Somel from Sabancı University, Professor Nüket Esen and Associate Professor Meltem Ahıska from Boğaziçi University, and Professor Fatmagül Berktay from Istanbul University. The honorary chairman of the panel was Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dean Professor Mehmet Baç.
Winning papers were presented at the conference
The first seminar in the conference was titled “Contemplating Gender over Places” where Ayfer Bartu Candan from Boğaziçi University was the discussant and Doğu Durgun from Sabancı University and Avşar Gürpınar from Istanbul Technical University were speakers. This was followed by the “Relationship between Law and Gender” seminar where Bertil Emrah Öder from Koç University was the discussant and Olcay Karacan from Ankara University and Nezihat Bakar from Istanbul University presented papers. The last conference was “Gender over Language”. The discussant was Hülya Adak from Sabancı University and the speakers were Özlem Ezer from the York University and Meral Akbaş from the Middle East Technical University.
Attending the Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards Ceremony were Sabancı University President Professor Nihat Berker, and the friends, family and students of Dicle Koğacıoğlu.
